Where the Dirt Road Leads, Is Up to You!

I am a country girl, born and raised in Northern Alabama.  Now, I live in a beautiful, small waterfront community of Eastern North Carolina.  I have always found something very special about dirt roads, and have yet to find one that didn't lead to something wonderful.  Whether it be an overlook in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the path to a beautiful & peaceful pond or maybe just the way to grandma's house... always special!

This weekend, as my family and I were headed for a Cub Scout Family Campout, we turned down the dirt road that leads to Camp Sam Hatcher.  The camp is several acres of property left to the Boy Scouts of America by Dr. Sam Hatcher, a man respected by all in the community and missed by those who knew him.

The road may not look like much to many folks, but I knew that if we stopped long enough to soak it in, paying attention to every detail, every sight, every sound.... It would be special.  Oh sure, the truck is in desperate need of a good cleaning, and the dust has settled on everything we have (including our sinuses), but it is SOOOOOO worth it!

The camp is located off Nine Mile Road in Newport, North Carolina, and is smack dab in the middle of the Croatan National Forest. It is absolutely gorgeous, but of course.... I knew it would be.  It is at the end of a dirt road!

No matter what you are experiencing, don't forget to look up (you might just see those beautiful Carolina Pines), look down (or you may miss the rare, wild Venus Fly Traps), look all around, soak in every precious thing and remember to always pay attention to details!

"The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail"

Amy, I have also been intrigued by dirt roads. And like you, I have never been disapoointed in the journey.

Especially this time of year, it's great to get outdoors and see the details in nature. Didn't know there are venus fly traps in N Carolina. Gorgeous pictures, and thanks for your post today,

Hi Amy,

A blog about dirt roads!

In fact, I grew up at the end of a very long dirt road.

And the place was beautiful indeed.

You are relating dirt roads to your childhood and this is the reason why your post came out so beautiful..

So,  are you Roll Tide or War Eagle?

Ed - Thanks.  Now..... FOCUS!

Patricia - Of course, I think that Eastern NC is one of the most beautiful areas too!  I have lived in many places, but I think I have found my favorite! The entire state of NC is gorgeous.... from the mountains to the sea!  Thank You!

Judi - I love the natural canopies and now..... I'm a little jealous!  To each his own, for sure!  I'll take the dirt roads ;0)

Debbie - Gotta appreciate the simple things.  You're right, they are the best!

Tammie - If I ever find a dirt road that disappoints, I'll be surprised.  Glad you enjoy them too, they are special.

Pamela - I never knew that Venus fly traps grew here either.... Learn something new everyday!  On this journey, I also learned what a Pitcher Box Plant is.... very cool!

Phil - I blog about anything and everything..... Dirt Roads deserve to be recognized in the spotlight ;0)  Have a great day!

Fernando - WAR EAGLE all the way, Baby!

Amy, It sounds like you had a wonderful family outing.  Just be careful of the ticks out there.  They are getting worse every year and can cause so much damage.

Dan - Life is way too short to not enjoy every moment to the fullest.... I occasionally forget to stop & smell the roses.

Cheryl - Good Morning.  I imagine that everyone has great dirt roads somewhere close by.... just gotta learn to take them every now & then ;0)

Christiansen Team - Our white truck is still carrying the dirt road around.... If we aren't too busy enjoying life this weekend, maybe she'll get a bath ;0)  Have a great day!

Michael - Yep, it is great!  So many wonderful things surround us each and every day.... Recognizing them is the challenge!

Paula - The ticks were HORRIBLE!  We spray our entire camp site, our bodies, our clothes..... we still had to perform "Tick Searches" every couple of hours and found a few :-(  You are right, they can be dangerous!

Joni - I get the feeling that you don't forget very often ;0)  Life is Good!

I remember when I was a little girl my aunt and uncle took me on a road trip out west with my cousins. One day we decided to veer off the map and take a road "less traveled." Twenty years later I still remember that drive and how gorgeous and untouched it felt. Sometimes that unfamiliar road really does turn out to be a gamble worth taking!

Hi Amy,  Very cool post.  Our business can be so all consuming at times.  Thanks for a beautifully written reminder to stop and enjoy those roads less traveled.

Richie - Thank You and Yes.... Those are Venus Fly Traps.  Thankfully, the scouts knew exactly what they were and protected them from getting stomped on.

Margie - That road must have been special.... You remember it years later.  Too bad there aren't more dirt roads!

Bill - Thanks!  I do believe in taking the "scenic route" whenever possible.   You just never know what you might be missing!  Hope you have a great day!

Amen to that.  And another pretty gold star! :)  It is amazing to me how different things look now that I think about them thru the eye of a camera, saving them for posterity.  Beautiful photos, and the car wash was just an added bonus :)
