Tomorrow, in connection with Tornado Awareness Week, Minnesota will be sounding the sirens at 1:45 PM.  Schools, businesses and people at home are encouraged to treat this as a real event and seek shelter to see how quickly everyone responds.

Some counties will be repeating this at 6:45 in the evening.  If you don't have kids or other relatives, at least plan to check to see if you pets and you can make it to a safe place quickly.

This is a good time to plan ahead, too, to have some basics in your shelter.  Have a radio or weather radio. flashlights and spare batteries, boots, raingear and extra clothes along with water, canned goods, a can opener and eating utensils.

If you need more than that, such as extra medications, make sure that you have at least a two day supply of everything.  I include a couple of buckets and toilet paper, too.  What goes in must come out, not to be indelicate.  But, you never know.

For food, we keep some canned fruit, canned salmon, dog food, cat food and some beef stew for whoever needs that.

You can pick and choose what your family needs, but make sure you at least have water, light and a radio.

We don't have kids here anymore, but we do have our pets.  And, some weeks, the boys get quite a work out going up and down the basement steps!

Suzanne- maybe we should have something similar to this for hurricanes!  Perhaps then people would stash the supplies they WILL need in the event of a hurricane.

Suzanne, you can never be too prepared and the time to work it all out isn't after the tornado hits.

Nevercan do these to many times.  People just don't remember and by the time they figure it out it can be to late.

The drills should make everyone think. What if you are driving in your car...what are you going to do?

I think the buckets are a great thought. Who thinks of that? Well you did and way to go.

I'm kind of glad you told me about this. I wouldn't have known or remembered and then I'd be confused.

Suzanne - Good thing to do but kind of a scary thought. I wouldn't want to see a tornando go through.

Thanks, Suzanne.  I will be at the shop today.  So I will be able to tell everyone when the siren goes off that it is just a drill.  Whew!

Suzanne -- good reminder --- it's always best to be prepared with the necessary supplies.

so many people don't plan for pets in the event of an emergency.  And I'd NEVER leave our pets behind.
