Red Bank NJ Real estate Susan McLaughlin America's best small towns

Smithsonian Magazine calls Red Bank the third-best small town in America in its May issue

I agree!  Red Bank is a very special place.  It's the old-fashioned downtown of our memories with independently run stores, sidewalk cafes and beautiful waterfront parks.  Red Bank is the cultural center of the Jersey shore, with live music seven nights per week.  We've got three performing arts theaters featuring first-run plays, symphonic orchestras and every kind of performer from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen to this week's headliner, Willie Nelson.

It’s the big little town. The small downtown with big culture. The place where people grew up, moved back to and want to grow old in.  We meet the enthusiastic newcomers as well as the people who were raised in the nearby suburbs of Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Middletown and Holmdel who want to be back at the Shore and live in a walk-to town setting.

At any time of day, you'll see kayak enthusiasts.  Warm weather brings boaters, stand-up paddle boarders and water skiers and some years, dolphins who make the Navesink River their summer home.

When the river freezes over, the ice boats come out.  While iceboat regattas bring people from all over the country, there are a group of locals who fly across the ice on the same 40' wooden boats their great-grandfathers did.  They are members of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club in Red Bank.  They share a landmark building with the Monmouth Boat Club, founded in 1879.

Shopping in Red Bank is the farthest thing from shopping in a mall, each store is unique.  There are friendly shopkeepers to welcome you through their doors.  Many of these folks are running the shop they always dreamed of, from handmade furniture stores to edgy boutiques, a dozen galleries featuring original art, great antique shops, a retro arcade and a 24 hour Jersey diner.

Commuters from Red Bank have the option of the train, the Garden State Red Bank NJ Brian Rice iceboat Susan McLaughlinParkway, commuter bus or hopping on one of two ferry lines for a traffic-free ride into Manhattan.  The ferries stop at Wall Street, the Wold Financial Center and stops at midtown East and West sides.  In season, the ferries run to Yankee games, Martha's Vineyard and Hudson River foliage tours.
