TODAY, I DELETED A POST FOR THE FIRST TIME....Full Disclosure As To Why:

TODAY, I DELETED A POST FOR THE FIRST TIME....Full disclosure as to why:

I did it because it became an unimaginable monster. It became a monster because in the process of going back and forth with an individual, or rather 2 individuals, I could see the writing on the wall and the subject matter became something I never ever thought I would be tackling at this point in my career: the ethical treatment of the private information about a client or customer.

I deleted my post about the websites Zillow and Trulia's crazy pricing of properties here in my small Village of Southampton, New York.....something Zillow calls Zestimates and Trulia doesn't seem to have a name for.

It became a monster because I made the bad mistake of trusting an individual here on AR to give me the "scoop" on how these 2 firms come up with their pricing which in my point of view, are always way off the mark. Not only that but these two sites are dead wrong in every case and no one can tell me why they insist on pricing properties that they have never seen in areas they know nothing about. Zillow also insists on revealing properties as "Foreclosures" when they are not.

Leslie Ebersole urged me to take down the post and I appreciate her concern over the way the thread was unfolding...Passions were running wild and in that back and forth, I may have said things that were not beneficial to me or any of my supporters or clients/customers!

I must say, there is one individual who has been a follower of mine but is not supporter and she reared her ugly head at the end of the post, which is the main reason I deleted the post...She had divulged in her comment,  my home address  which she found on Zillow ---I have complained to ActiveRain about this person who used to be from the Long Island area...and a neighboring competitor. She moved but still remains here on AR, doing her best to make me wrong at every turn....she is scary too.

So, just now I went on a blogsite: Occupy Zillow? ...and I found this video, purely by accident:

http://youtu.be/P4pZ0zJdfAY

This is something we, as real estate professionals all need to see! I wish I had known about this couragous act before I wrote my post--I would have handled my issues with the 2 sites very differently.

Please let me know what you  think?...and thanks to all who participated in the back and forth on my last post---sorry I had to delete it but I did save a copy!

SORRY ABOUT THE HUGE WHITE SPACE---TRIED TO DELETE AND CAN'T.....

Paula, I hope today is looking brighter for you. I think you can use this an opportunity to provide leadership in your community in the issues of listing syndication and the ever-changing world of real estate marketing. Managing your listings' on-line presence takes enormous effort that we're all learning as we go. Maybe you could sponsor a multi-broker workshops on how syndication works and how 3rd party sites operate? Since some/all of your listings aren't managed through an mls, it might be different from most other areas. I know you're a classy lady, and I also know that taking the high road will also be best in the long run.

Hi All: In the high emotions of the day that I wrote the original post I see,  as I go back to look, that I did give out my own home address--I did it when I was quoting what I said to the individual who I had turned to for help from Zillow...I apologize to all who I told I had NOT given it out, when in fact I did. I need to clear the air about that issue because it is coloring the REAL one: we all need to be aware that the syndication of all our listings is creating another form of real estate and we need to be aware of that...we have nothing to gain and everything to lose if we ignore it.

Leslie: First of all thank you for making an issue of taking down the post---I had that in the back of my mind but did not want to appear that I was dodging the isssue that I brought up! So, with your urging I did take it down and I appreaciate your help in doing that....Now to the issue of what my company does: Whether they use the syndication of these websites or not is not an issue to me---I have never seen that they do because our "MLS" system is OREX, a privately owned one that is used by most brokerages on the  Eastern end of Long Island...for The Hamptons. The Manahttan brokerages do not use MLS either and so my company was involved in developing a "VOW" system which I don't know if it got anywhere because I have not seen anything come from it....At some point, that may become the type of system we use, but right now it is the OREX service which is used for reciprocity between brokerages. Corcoran has used Zillow and Trulia more than any other agency here and that was where I saw one problem with pricing--or Zestimates. It is TBD as to how it all play s out but if you were able to see the video here---there are other people who are concerned about what is happening to a profession that is so locally focused. All real estate IS local after all.

Well shucks.  You know what I think.  I see no problem posting the article and in fact, I'd probably post it PUBLIC.

I did watch the video.  I should have tried it before saying I couldn't.  Apparently on this clear sunny day my satellite dish is bringing in strong signals.

The video is a piece of art.  What a classy guy.

BTW, I found my post about Zillow/Fiduciary.

http://activerain.com/blogsview/512431/zillow-s-hubris-is-becoming-palpable-come-on-zillow-come-back-to-earth-

I can't locate the Sara Bonert post that inspired it.  It must have been deleted.

All I can say about the matter is, never before has such an monumental scam been perpetrated on such a huge percentage of the real estate consuming public at the expense of so many otherwise smart and hard working real estate agents and brokers.

Lenn: Good--glad you could see it! He said everything I wish I could have said in my post and more! I am going to go look at your post now--maybe I can get some inspiration from that too! :)...and whats up with all these posts being deleted??? I just did my first and last delete of a post. I am having real angst about deleting it and I did save it so  I just may go back in, copy from word, which is where I saved it, and republish it! How about that??? Thank you Lenn for being who you are and for being here on ActiveRain!

Paula:  We live in a world where so much is possible via communications and technology ... both good and bad.  Unfortunately, you were exposed and had to deal with the bad here on the Rain.  Your experience reminds me of a line in the movie Jurassic Park (and I'm paraphrasing) ... "Just because you Can ... doesn't mean you should".  And that's so true in this instance.  Again, because so much IS possible, doesn't mean that you should take advantage of it.  Obviously your offender did.  Glad you took the action you did in response ...

I'm adding this as a Featured post.  I think it's important for all of us to at least mull-over in our own minds, the ramifications of this action ... and to watch the video you include ...

Paula, I've been mulling over your situation. Real estate is local but the internet is ubiquitous. The impact of unintended consequences is sometimes devastating, so we all need to learn from each other. I hope you have a sunny warm day and get to take a long walk on your beautiful beach. PS: my mom's family is up and down the CT seaboard, including Old Saybrook where my Grandma lived the last 30 years of her life. I just looked online and cannot believe the home prices. Staggeringly high. I have Gardiner -- Gardiner's Island -- in my line...want to go hunting? I have papers :-).

Gene: Well thank you! I think there is so much good on AR that I hesitate to lay any of the blame for the diffculty here but I see your point and it is well taken....We all need to see the potential with the sites mentioned and take what Jim (from the video) did as a big clue to where we all may be headed.

Leslie: You are so sweet! I would love to go hunting! on Gardiners Island of all places!....and the beauty on the Ct coastline is just as beautiful as it is here! (I love Old Saybrook too!) ..and I would love to go take along walk on the beach here but I have been working today via the phone; while my buyer was out driving around he was asking about addresses on Gin Lane and Meadow Lane that looked interesting and I gave him the sales history or the property data right from my home computer! What a way to work...I wonder if agents for Zillow or Trulia can do that for a buyer?

Lenn: I read your post on the same subject--that was in '08!!! You always have been ahead of your time---I think you could see the potential nightmare developing and there it is in black and white..Very good read; you should re-publish it for the valuable subject matter here!

Kathy: I think I have cleared up the question of who divulged the information and I take complete responsibility in the fact that my original post, which you probably did not see did have the address in it---still, it is not such a good thing to see it mentioned again in a comment from someone else and under the chaotic circumstances, it blew me away and I got very upset....I think I have cleared up that issue thank goodness because it was cloudiing the REAL issue and that is the one mentioned in the video---hope you had a chance to see it---if you didn't, pelase take the time to go back and look....

Paula I am glad you did not pack our bags and walk away from AR. You are an awesome contributor to our cummunity.  The old saying Sh** happens certainly did. And you're bigger than going to their level.  I did watch the video and it many agents clearly don't know what's really going on.  At first it sounded like a good idea to 'syndicate' but the cost has been huge to many.  And who's making money off of us - again?

Anna: Thank you for seeing the video---you can pass it on as well--what a work of art that is--as Lenn so clearly stated. I also saw her post for "08 and it rings just as true today as it did back then! You are so wonderful to have here on AR---it has been such a pleasure to be here and to be associated with you and all the others who are members here! I really could not give all that up! Thank you for seeing that too! Iwas in a quandry over the whole thing---I did re-publish the deleted post...without the comments that did contain private information in the comments.

Im curious if there is a way to pick and choose which syndication sites we do wish for our listings to go to?

Paula:  Just wanted to make clear that I was in no way blaming "the Rain" itself.  Just meant this is where this particular issue was taking place.  Good Lord no ... 99.999% of the people here are wonderful and want to help others.  Just to clear that up, in case you thought I meant otherwise ...

Teresa: I feel that syndication is syndication and from that standpoint you will lose any connection to the idea of being a local agent--that is one of the worst aspects of syndication IMHO...There is no reason for it at all if you are doing the work necessary to be the most knowledgable of all agents in your area! You can't get that recognition through syndication...syndiction may work in the areas just outside a metropolitan area but even then I hear there are very unhappy homeonwers and agents.

Zillow and Trulia both have their flaws but the public love's 'em so we play along until something else unseats them.  Glad you took that original post down, it was definitely getting ugly.

Bryan: Well, the real reason for taking it down was that in the heat of it all, the back and forth with a couple of people gave way to revealing private client information..that was not a good thing and with the encouragement of Leslie I did remove it---it got out of hand, as you say..thanks for coming hre and commenting! :)
