Arbor Day Celebration in St. George, UT

The 20th Arbor Day Celebration in St. George, UT will be coming on April 28th. There will be many events taking place from 9am to 1pm that will continue to beautify the community by planting trees, which will help St. George maintain its status as a Tree City USA. So, everyone is invited to come out to Tonaquint Nature Center at 1851 S Dixie Drive.

The main goal at this year’s event is to plant 150 trees in honor of St. George’s Sesquicentennial Celebration in one of the areas small groves. Planting trees in the desert help with the climate and many trees make the area more beneficial to new comers looking to buy real estate in St. George, UT.

For St. George to meet the standards of a Tree City USA community, they must continue four important projects which include having a Tree Board, a Tree Care Ordinance, host an annual Arbor Day Celebration, and have a Community Forestry Program. For nineteen years St. George has been able to maintain its status as a Tree City and there are seventy-seven other cities in Utah that are recognized as Tree Cities. Very few hold the status longer than St. George.

St. George is looking for over 500 volunteers to help out with this year’s big event. They are looking for locals to help with planting trees and flowers along the new trail that connects the bird blind to the reclaimed bridge. Over the past years, this area has changed drastically due to these type efforts. And, in just a few short years, these new plants and trees will begin to mature making the area even more beautiful. Volunteers will also be spreading mulch along the trails and helping to prune bushes.

There will be crafts for the kids at the Nature Center that is free of charge, and volunteers will get free snacks. So, mark your calendars and bring the family to help on Arbor Day 2012.
