This morning I had a meeting with one of my tenants to sign a lease extension. During our visit the tenant got very emotional and thanked me for giving her a chance to live in a nice place. You see her credit was blemished when she first applied but my husband and I took a chance on her that she would respect our property and pay on time. We first rented to her two years ago and and are extending with her for another year. She has been a fabulous tenant and not disappointed us one time.
My tenant went on to say she wished she had learned from her parents how important it was to have good credit. She said it was never mentioned and her parents didn't have particularly good credit habits. Therefore, she followed suit and was reckless and damaged her credit during her late teens and early twenties. The result was being turned down for credit on things she really needed, mostly importantly nice places to live. She was left with properties to consider that were very undesirable These places were sometimes located in unsafe areas and caused her great anxiety for her young son's safety.
She said she was teaching her son how important it was to be a good steward of his money and to protect his credit. It made me think that all of us should be more aware of how we influence our children when it comes to maintaining a good credit standing. How much better our whole society and economy would be if we as parents would do a better job in this one area.
