Is your computer infected? The FBI says check NOW and they are not joking. Your computer or network could be one of the hundreds of thousands around the globe infected by hackers though an online advertising scam. So what? This could be a scam too. Well, it appears NOT to be one. If your computer or network is infected the odds are high you will lose your ability to connect with the internet on July 9, 2012. News stories have been all over the net for the past two days to remind people to check their computers and networks.
When the FBI put out the first warning months ago, it did not make front screen/page news. All this was news to me today. Do a Google search for “FBI.gov malware” for more info or go directly to www.fbi.gov and search for DNS Changer malware. It appears our computers are on the most wanted list to be fixed as soon as possible!
Here is what to do now to check in one click if you computer is infected with the DNS malware. Go to the http://www.dcwg.org site. Click on the word DETECT or the green button next to it. The site will move you to another page where you need to click on your language link. You will see a GREEN logo with the message “DNS Resolution (equals) Green. Your computer appears to be looking up IP addresses correctly!” This means you are safe unless your network is infected.
If you see a RED logo saying your computer appears to be infected with the DNS malware, do not panic. I understand you will be directed by a link to fix your computer with antivirus tools effective to remove the malware within this site.
If you want to read more before you do anything the site does provide detailed information. Whatever you do next, do not wait until July 8th! And make a difference by passing this information forward. The computer you help save may be your Mom’s, your kids or your customers and clients!
