Originally installed in a lake, Flip Weber's art sculpture donation "The Mountain Climber" is now climbing the walls at the Troon North Fire Station at The Mountain Climberthe George "Doc" Cavalliere Park in Scottsdale.

This new site is extremely appropro, being located near Pinnacle Peak Park - a popular hiking and climbing destination, that is also celebrating its 10th anniversary.  The firestation also houses the Technical Rescue Team (TRT) for the Valley's firefighters who help rescue hikers and mountain climbers when they get in trouble in the Valley's mountain preserves.

I spoke with the scupture's donor Flip Weber at Friday's installation and learned some history behind the piece.

This piece of art was created in 1971 by now deceased artist Dale Wright, who also created the art sculpture "Don Quixote" seen by residents in the lake at the Scottsdale Civic Center. (See map for 23 sculptures at the Scottsdale Civic Center - Don Quixote is #23). The sculpture "The Mountain Climber" , which Flip originally donated to the city 10 years ago and finally has been installed, features about 5000 pieces of steel welded together to create this unique sculpture. Visitors  may enjoy the piece by visiting the new 34-acre park.

The entrance to the park is easy to miss - it's located just south of the firehouse (use the same driveway) at 27775 N. Alma School Pkwy, Scottsdale.
