I show a lot of rural property, land and homes in Albemarle county.

There are some areas in Nelson, Fluvanna and Greene counties that are seldom on the market. Before I drive out to these properties I like to give the listing agent a call and there is one question that I always ask....

What about those "Langoliers"?

I usually get a "WHAT" response and I go on to ask about those "Huge Power Lines".... Are there any visible from the property... (Most Agents will not put a picture of a Power Line in the photos of our MLS. Why would they?)

You see when you are looking at rural property, power has to get there some way and most of it is not underground.

These large power lines are a real eye-sore for many of my buyers. Some feel that they are also a health risk.

So if I ask an agent about those "Langoliers" I want to know about "Power Lines" ...

If you did not read the Steven King Book, or see the movie, you have no idea what I am talking about!

Charles, I don't know about Langoliers -- but I do know that power lines through the backyard or even a glimpse of them can often times be a deal breaker.  Would you suggest the King book or movie?

Yes Charles I read Stephen King and I got it in the title.  <chuckle, chuckle>  Did you see the TV Movie?

I never really thought about it here in NYC as our power lines are underground and only phone and cable is above ground in some areas where they use wooden telephone poles.

BRIAN - A good movie, my wife liked the book better! I did not read it.... But when you see those Power Lines moving (in the movie) you will know what I mean...

TONI - I enjoyed the movie!

NYC may not have this issue, but when you come to my area and want 100 acres, we have to ask the questions!!! BTW, I have that 100 acres when you are ready!

Charles, I know when I was looking at buying here in Atlanta, one subdivision had those poles running through them. We would not buy even though the home was significantly cheaper.

DANNY - I know, I have had a lot of clients that would not even consider a home close to one...

Charles, I read a lot of Stephen King and I do know about the Langoliers. I agree with your wife, the book was better than the movie. Power lines and Langoliers do go together. Leave it to Stephen King! Cute post! Thanks for the chuckle!

Charles ~ I read the book and saw the movie - I tend to agree with your wife (and the others above me) that the book was better!  I also agree with you that I would want to know if those "Langoliers" are there before you take someone out there.

Charles - I talked a client OUT of buying a home last summer because of the power lines that ran behind the home - he was shocked that I was trying to talk him out of it! He talked it over with his father, who totally supported my opinion - he then purchased another home and was really happy that I was thinking of the person, not the sale!

After looking up langoliers, that's cute.  I would be one of the agents who went "WHAT?"  Now I know.

LOL, I just loves how those power lines stick out like a sore thumb whe you look at the landscape, and then when the Langoliers get closer, it's the power lines that tell you how close they are!

God, when I first saw that (in 1999, age 11), I was like freaking out! They are so cool, when ever I see those types of powerlines, I think of the Langoliers! Poor Mr. Toomy and Don (African Guy). Well acturlly, Don was arealy dead when the Langoliers ate him, but we don't see that.

I think I watched part of the movie but not all.  I have sold several new homes sites with "Langoliers" and so far no one really complains.

I've been a Stephen King fan since Carrie, and since I also work at Borders Books and Music (great health, dental, and vision benefits for me and my partner), I've read everything he's written, some of them more than once (The Stand, The Dark Tower). I've never failed to not like the movies because books and movies are two different things and should never be compared to each other. Books allow one to use one's own imagination while movies are the imagination of only a couple of people. I've always found it interesting to watch a movie after reading the book to see how someone else used their imagination.
