Thoughts on the Luxury of Simplicity: Can Simple be Luxurious?

By

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit a wonderful home on a horse property that was luxurious due to its simplicity. Western simplicity.  Afterwards, I found myself asking - can simple really be luxurious?

I think so.

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, luxury is defined as:

1.        A condition of abundance or great ease and comfort.

2.       Something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely necessary.

3.       An indulgence in something that provides pleasure, satisfaction or ease.

Simple, less ornate, buildings and homes compliment the beauty of the outdoors.

In the photo above, which was taken at Lake Pueblo, if you were able to see all of the boats and the marina, would you notice the beautiful sky or the reflections on the water?  Probably not.

Consider dressage riders.Dressage Rider

They generally wear simple black and white riding attire.  The simplicity is both elegant and formal.

Simplicity can be deceptive.

Dressage itself is anything but simple.   It takes years of training for a horse and rider to achieve the harmony that this particular pair, in the photo to the right, displayed yesterday at the Colorado Horse Park.   Unfortunately, I missed the rider's name.

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to watch a skilled dressage rider, at the end of this post,  I'll attach a YouTube video of a free style dressage performance to James Bond music that was played live in the video by the Metropole Orchestra.  Sean Connery was purportedly on hand to say the famous phrase, "My name is Bond, James Bond."  The horse and Anky Van Grunsven, the rider, dance to the music.   The harmony of the performances provide an appearance of smoothness and simplicity.

For some, simply having time to spend time outdoors is a luxury.

Luxury has many perspectives.  The thoughts of horse owners could differ greatly from the desires of an urban family.

Have an outstanding week, with your camera in hand.

Sondra,

It is lovely to hear from you again, and I like your new photo.  Simplicity is one of the hardest thing to attain as it seems to many that simplicity is giving up a lot.  Leonardo da Vinci said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication", and Steve Jobs and Apple live by it.  I love simplifying, it is one of the ultimate luxuries. Dressage is a fascinating horse riding event which most don't know much about but your video brings folks up to speed quickly. Simplicity in all of life is vastly underestimated. It can be so much harmony between things without clutter. Simple is powerful. In choice, lifestyle, even in design. The lake picture is very peaceful.

Absolutely - simplicity is luxurious. Clutter - that is NOT luxurious. The dressage horses and riders have had to focus on one thing, simply one thing.

Sondra- Whenever I rid myself of all of the "things" around me that I really don't need or use I do feel that luxury of simplicity. I love it!

Hi Sndra-there is plenty of luxury in simplicity I agree. The best example is someone taking time for themself and enjoying doing whatever they may.

Good morning Sondra,

Life can so much more be appreciated when there is complete harmony..your lake picture is so peaceful and you tend to hone in to what is important..the gorgeous sky and ripples..the most simple pleasures mother nature offers:).

I do agree with you about simplicity. Often less can be better. I did watch the video and it was beautiful. I'm going to share it with my daughter later.

I love horses, and even though I live in a rural area and have acreage, I don't have one. I haven't ridden since I was a teenager.
