booksWorld Book and Copyright Day is April 23!  Celebrate the Day!

Whether you read books on your Kindle, Nook or iPad or even the “old fashioned” way, help celebrate this day by......

-sharing a favorite author with a fellow reader
-donating a book to your local hospital, school or library
-sitting  down with your children and reading them a story from your favorite childhood book
-donating your time to read a book for the blind
-going outside the box and reading a genre or author new to you

What is this day?
This day is celebrated in over 100 countries throughout the world.  Started by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, this day hopes to “promote reading, publishing, and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.”

Why this day?
This is thought to be an appropriate day because this is the birthday or day Shakespeareof death of several prominent authors such as Cervantes, Maurice Druon, and my favorite... William Shakespeare.

Now, as for Copyright...we have our own resident expert right here at ActiveRain.  If you’re new to AR  or haven’t yet discovered Lenn Harley.... where have you been???  Lenn has written many knowledgeable and useful posts on copyright and if you think no one’s going to check you or care... think again.

You should care because our “intellectual property”  is witnessed right here on ActiveRain in the posts we write every day.

We work hard to choose just the right words that will reflect our thoughts and feelings and engage and entertain our readers.  Copyright does matter.

And.. did you know that you can download books

published over 100 years ago for free

on your Kindle!

There are also many sites where you can swap books,  as well as brick and mortar stores that accept and sell used books.

So what do you say...have you read any good

books lately?

I read an average of 2 to 3 books a month, only because there is not enough time to read more. I love libraries and audiobooks!

Ginny- I always have a book with me thanks to Kindle that I upload to my Droid.

Dee-that’s one that I read probably in the early 70’s and have not read again.  I might just reread it.

Barbara-  I love to see anyone reading but especially young people.

BarbaraT- oh, I bet your grandchildren love you!!   In a previous life when I did psychological testing, I had to administer a brief reading test to see if they were going to be able to read the test.  So many couldn’t read above the 3rd grade level, I realized the importance of our schools teaching our kids to read if nothing else.

Ron-  What a coincidence!   While I love Shakespeare, I love reading mysteries.

Conrad-I know.  I have tried to stay away from buying books except through Kindle and even at that I don’t own a Kindle.  I read them on my PC or Smartphone.

Dianne- it does make it easy, and I’m not one that can just crank out a post.  I have to work at it, so I don’t want it “lifted.”

John/QMan-And guess what... when and if you retire, you’ll probably be busier than ever!  I too find that a lot of my time is spent reading on the Internet.

Janis- I’m so glad you like it.   Reading is so important.  And when I hear of a parent reading to their children and taking them to the library I know that they’re starting them off on the right foot.

Lenn- well how in the heck could I mention copyright day without mentioning YOU!!!   I no longer buy paper books and  I read the  newspaper online.  Love it.

Malcolm-when my niece started putting together her social media plan for her business I suggested she learn about copyright laws.

Richie- I’ve traveled to so many places and through so many times via the books I read.

Gary- it should be on Lenn’s birthday!  We listened to audio books on our long trips before Sirius radio!

Doris-that is such a great idea, especially starting the babies off with their first books.  Even though I get my books online I still love going into a brick and mortar store.

Joanna-I’ve read that there is still that question, but I’m just going to still think he (Shakespeare) wrote them.  That would make an interesting read, though!

Teri-yes, and I think the only cost you’re out is the shipping.

Sandi- I know what you mean about no time for books!  I’ll read a few pages while drying my hair!  We just “discovered” our library last year.  Before that, we hadn’t been in one since college.

Richard- I accidentally went by your name but I don’t have an eReader either but I have books from Amazon’s Kindle on my Smartphone.  I didn’t want to have another electronic gadget to carry around.  And yes, if Lenn is using one, then we all need to get in the game!

Erv- I got the pic from iClipart,to which I subscribe. And I do love ebooks.

Lou- ok...we want to know...do you have an eReader?

Joe- and a good phrase it is!!!  Have a great week.

Stephen-if you’re not familiar with Lenn’s posts on copyright, then sit down with a cup of coffee and have a read.

Carie- I think it’s a good idea for all of us to be reminded about copyright.  I know that when Pinterest came out it was a big issue.

Great post!  Thanks for sharring.  I enjoy reading but I must admit I have a difficult time with Nook or Kindle.  There is just something about the feel of book in your hand when you are reading it!

I guess I'm just from a different generation!  Don't tell anyone!

Kathy - I didn't know it was a big day. I'm not surprised because everyone wants to keep the right to their info and pictures. We are a very possesive bunch.

I never knew about either of these days! Thanks for letting us know! Love, love, love my Nook... I share the account with my mom and sisters so we're constantly buying each other books. Luckily we have similar taste. World Book Day is a very worthy cause to dedicate a day to.

I love Bill.  And, I love Kathy for letting us know about this commemoration.  Thanks.  What would we do without Shakespeare?

Ron- thanks!  I'm going to that site tonight after my AR time!  The older I get the harder it is for me to remember if I'd already read a book or just think I did.

Wanda- I agree with you on all counts.  The opportunity to sit and read is like a treat for me.  And Lenn is the go to person regarding copyright.

Linda- I still do like holding a book in my hand but it's nice to be able to travel and not have to take along a ton of books.

Morgan- I think that if the eReaders have brought more people to reading then it's worth every penny.

Toni- we are, aren't we.  I wonder if that's such a good thing.

Gretchen- one of my favorite days was when my best friend's daughter and I spent the afternoon by the water reading.

Judi- I have been trying to put everything in digital form for years.  So tired of paper everywhere.

Suzanne- Glad you liked it!  I remember the first time I read Shakespeare.  Didn't understand what I was reading but after I learned to read him, I loved it.

Kathy, I have so many books on my "to read" list, it's not even funny! I practically need to take a vacation in solitude to catch up. :)

Leilani

P.S. I still read the old-fashioned way! :)

P.P.S. I found a Sensei...Craig Daniels! :)

Morning Kathy first of all congrats on the feature.  Now I bought my wife an I-pad for Christmas and she has done everything but read books on it.  She plays a game called bubbles something.  As for me I'll read the written word the old fashioned way

My wife has a Kindle and loves it.  I read enough during the day that I don't read for pleasure anymore.
