Work Like You Don't Need the Money

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Work like you don't need the money. You've probably heard that expression before but it's a good one. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody is watching. I could probably get by on the income I earn as a writer for About.com. Well, it's not enough to fund a 3-week luxury trip to French Polynesia this winter, but it does pays the bills. So, when I tell you I love being a Sacramento short sale agent, you better believe it. Because it's the truth. I'm not doing this job for the money, although the money is great and I'm not complaining.

There are many different types of jobs a real estate agent can do. Not every agent works in short sales. Not every agent even likes to take listings. Some prefer to work only with buyers. When I started in this business in the 1970s, I was a buyer's agent. I thought that was the ticket. Because a buyer would buy something and not every seller would sell. Of course, I learned along the way that not every buyer is a buyer but a well priced listing typically does sell.

One of my Elk Grove short sale sellers is looking for a new career, and I suggested real estate. I mean, how do you pick a new career? Do you go back to school and get a graduate degree? Do you attend a trade school and hope the school will help you to find a job -- most trade schools are in the business of selling tuition and dreams, not necessarily jobs. This seller wants to travel to foreign countries and help people. You could join the Peace Corps or you could go into real estate and use your earnings to travel. Either way you accomplish that goal.

She balked at the idea and said she was not a salesperson. You don't have to sell to be in real estate. It may come as a surprise to many people but you can't really talk a buyer into buying a home any more than you can talk a seller into selling a home. But you can be the agent who is in the right place at the right time.

I was in the right place at the right time when I decided to specialize in Sacramento short sales. I started working in short sales at the end of 2005. And look where I am today. I can call myself the #1 short sale agent among the 1,000 or so agents working at Lyon Real Estate. My focus is listing homes for sale. With every closing, I try to learn something new that I use to perfect and polish my systems. But I also work like I don't need the money. And that's why I love my job. How many people can say that and mean it nowadays?

Well said, Elizabeth!  Think your seller, along with many others still have a misconception about what we do.  We don't "sell" someone on a house.  We consult with them and facilitate them finding the "right" one for their needs.

Great insight - I've heard it many times - love what you do and the money will follow. The truth is people like working with people who don't try to sell them but offer services meet their needs.

Yeah, Bob, because when you become attached to the outcome, the outcome controls you and not the other way around.

Hi Travis: Listening is important. So is asking questions.

Hi Gina: Do I have a featured post somewhere that I cannot see?

Mary, Leslie, Bill and Linda: Loving your job is not enough, though. You've got to do more than love your job. You have to give a damn about doing the job to the very best of your ability and then 10 times better than that.

I completely agree that we are not doing sales in the traditonal salesperson model. If anything, we are facilitators. Great post!

Oh, I can dance like nobody's watching because most of the time when I'm dancing, no one else is there!  Love the idea of working like I don't need the money...gonna try that out.  I'll let you know how it goes!

Boy, isn't that the truth. The more you don't need the money the more fun a job becomes.

Although I do need this job and the income it provides, I go to a happy place in my head when working with buyers and sellers and find that if you are not focused on a possible paycheck you are able to enjoy the showings and not worry about whether or not a deal actually comes to fruition.  I have been on the other side of a transaction in which it was apparent that the other realtor desperately needed the closing and there is sometimes a rush that can cause problems.

Elizabeth - Great post.  I ran across something you wrote on about.com and I said hey that's Elizabeth from Active Rain.

I love your attitude.  We have to have money, but buyers and sellers both can tell if you are in it only for the money.

Hi Holly: It's a completely different experience than handing somebody an ice cream sundae and asking if for 50 cents more they'd like nuts on top.

Hi Donna: Or people can be too drunk to care about anybody else's dancing, I suppose.

Hi Cynthia: I imagine you enjoy your job oodles.

Hi Marnie: Not having to focus on whether a transaction closes and instead focusing on what makes the client happy is such a freeing experience.

Hi Karen: I don't know if buyers and sellers can tell if an agent is in the business solely for the money. I think it's more of an inner awareness you possess about yourself.

your suggestion: 'try real estate' ~ lol, i don't blame her for her reaction:)

There are very bad days and good days in my real estate life. Sometimes, i m seriously thinking of quieting....When i become too emotional~ it is not easy to overcome ....Sometimes you put so much efforts, but someone else ruins it....like in your blog about a careless  banker who ruined the deal not answering email on time....

Real estate is not solo job, we depend on others, when one fails to perform, we all fail.......it is often very frustrating.

Inna: Don't get discouraged. Just fire the ones who give you trouble and keep looking for that perfect connection. It's out there. When you find it, treat it like gold. No woman is an island in this business, but you can and should rely on others to support your efforts.

Such a great blog, Elizabeth.  I LOVE MY JOB!  Can't tell you exactly what it is, but it's definitely NOT the money.  I just wish I could ALWAYS do it with the mindset that I don't need the dollahs!  I am getting better, though.

Hi Eli, love your writing style and ease...there's a 'collective consciousness' as Kant or Hegel elaborated...'a will to live' I believe based on success, abundance but also exceptional compassion and empathy, ... and more significantly as real estate agents... that chapter of being genuine - authentic (congruent) to own values, regardless....

Thank you for sharing your 'balance'.

I agree with that "Work like you don't need the money" philosophy 100%.  I have often thought the worst real estate agents were those who seemed hungry and desperate.  It showed in the way they ran transactions, and especially when they were counting on commission checks before escrows closed.

Great post, and it's how I've always run my business.  Whether I'm having a great run of business and income, or whether I'm going through a slow period and cash is tight...I work hard, look out for MY CLIENT's best interests (not mine) and treat people like I would like to be treated.   Tough to go wrong that way...
