Linkedin and facebook - the death of the "cold call"

Back in the day, we picked up the phone and farmed for new business.  New and existing customers were "pitched" on the phone - sales were closed during a conversation.

Getting to the decision makers - we'll that was a process; befriend the assistant or secretary, get lucky and maybe get through - we needed thick skin, and a whole bunch of perseverance.

Now, Linkedin is hands down the best platform to connect on a B2B level.  In our small Company we've been able to reach the right people at a fast-pace.  Not only have we been able to "connect" but our connections are actually polite, honest and helpful - maybe that's a by-product of this new medium (no more hang-ups, and more courageous typist)?

After achieving what we believe to be success learning the Linkedin model - we are now on to facebook.  Unlike Linkedin it's not straight-forward - at least for business, but overtime I'm sure we'll figure it out.

Either way, our young company is a social media believer.  In fact, at one point early in my business career I thought I was pretty good on the phone.  Now, when given the chance, I find myself talking too much - my "sales pitch"  is simply out of style (and date).

It seems that if we can't deliver our marketing message in a few words - we've lost our prospect.  Looks like reading and pictures are the new conversation.  I concede to the new mediums - certainly glad I took typing in High School :)

I realize I am showing my age, but the phone conversation is dying - right?

Thanks,

Hi Brian,  Interesting observation.  I'm sure for many the social platforms are the new " cold call ".

Bill,

The social media platforms sure let us cover more ground - if it's a numbers game (business) then the change should be good - we'll see.

Thanks,

Not only does the social media cover more ground, but we also don't catch people "at the wrong time", they check their own profile sites at their convenience, we never interupt a meeting, a lunch, or someone's concentration on something else

Joanne,

Very true.  As a salesman myself, I do give a "cold caller" into my office the courtesy of letting them get out the first sentence but after that I'm gone...........we still have to see how sales over social media convert to $, but for now, it sure "appears" to be the preferred sales process.

Thanks,
