It was some time ago, but a professor in one of my graduate classes in conflict and negotiation told us of some key negotiation skills that were useable in everyday life.

These were great tips I use even to this day that I would like to share.

  1. Always have a an alternative option...Keeps emotions in check so you act on what IS best, not FEELS best!
  2. Educate the other side with options which provide mutual gain (it's not win lose if you both can win!)
  3. Be curious: use questions to use their information as a foundation for your interests.
  4. Don'tmake it personal....Focus on the problem, not the people.
  5. Why a person wants what they want is always more significant than what they say they want.

These techniques have served me well in negotiation and yep, conflict in my life.

I hope it does the same for you.

I'm looking for a good conflict and negotiation book.  Do you have any recommendations from your graduate class?

Here's a few:

  1. Getting to Yes
  2. The Only Negotiating Guide You Will Ever Need
  3. Tips and Traps When Negotiating Real Estate
  4. Getting Past No
  5. The Shadow Negotiator
  6. Get Anyone to Do Anything
  7. The Coward's Guide to Conflict
  8. Guerilla Negotiation

My recommendation is to check these out at amazon.com and look at thetable of contents, reviews etc and see what grabs you.  All of these are very different from each other.... hope that helps?  ;-)
