Are there times you have a project you know you should complete, but you just don't want to?

Procrastination not only affects the project you're avoiding, it also affects the rest of your work by interfering with your concentration and sapping your energy.

Here's the cure, and I am proud to say it has a 100% success rate.

Tool needed: a timer.

Step 1 - Clear away all distractions. Turn off the phone, radio, etc.

Step 2 - Set the timer for 15 minutes.

Step 3 - Work on the loathsome project, without stopping, for the entire 15 minutes.

Step 4 - After your 15 minutes are up, assess the situation. If you want to stop the project, give yourself permission to walk away without guilt.

When I try this exercise, I usually find myself so relieved to finally tackle the project that it's a breeze for me to complete it.

3 Comments on The Cure for Procrastination - It Works *Every* Time!

Think it kinda goes with our rhythm. Sometimes it's like pulling teeth, other times the work output just seems to flow effortlessly. Don't like the dentistry part.

It is also amazing that sometimes that dreaded task only takes 15 minutes once all the distractions are gone.

Gary - I can relate to your "pulling teeth" comment right now.  I have an article due on the 12th, and for some reason am having the toughest time getting it together.

Carolyn - so true.

Thanks to both of you for commenting; I'm off to work on my article for the next 15 minutes.
