Adopting a dog is not for everyone. If all humans were exemplary pet owners there would be no need for animal shelters eh?

However, if you have some patience and a little bit of time, rescuing a dog or 2 from a bad situation will bring you much more entertainment and happiness than they cost in food bills and vet visits.

Our dogs keep us sane...at least within spitting distance of sane

If you live in Fairfax County Virginia and you are thinking about getting a cat or dog, please consider adoption.

Our last three dogs have been adopted canines and they are awesome.

Fairfax County animal shelter

Visit the Fairfax County shelter off West Ox Road near Fair Oaks mall on a regular basis and you will find the right pet for you... it might not happen in one visit.

Some of the animals you will find there are too abused for a new pet owner or one with children to handle. Usually you can spot these animals right away.

One test I use before I ask the aides to let me meet the dog, is to simply see if the animal will come up to the front of its pen to meet me with a wagging tail.

If so, that is a very good first sign.

Many dogs will stay huddled in a corner or stare indifferently or agressively...not a good sign for a successful adoption.

Sadly some animals have become too psychotic for most of us to handle.

This is a very good adopted dog-Penny Lane

The last two dogs we got and still have, were very neurotic from abuse, but we took them on since we are pretty experienced dog people.

It took one of them a year to trust us, but they are now both outstanding and entertaining pets.

If you take your time and use common sense, you can get a great pet...REALLY CHEAP!

It is very affordable to adopt a pet in Fairfax County. I have seen some breeds there with dogs of good temperment that would easily cost you $700 if you purchased them from a breeder

  • Dogs- $40.00
  • Cats- $30.00
  • Rabbits/ferrets- $15.00
  • Reptiles/small birds- $10.00
  • Other (hamsters,gerbils)- $5.00
  • Equine/bovine- $200.00
  • Livestock- $20.00
  • Large birds- $100.00

  • who can resist Penny? No one.

You must pay to neuter any cat or dog you adopt...again ...a very reasonable expense.

  • Virginia State Law mandates that all dogs and cats adopted from a shelter must be spayed/neutered.
  • You are also responsible for paying 100 percent of the cost for spaying/neutering dogs and cats adopted from the shelter.
  • A deposit for surgery is taken at the time of adoption, and the balance is paid directly to the veterinarian when the pet is picked up after surgery.

Jan & Steve,

What an absolutely wonderful post! We have 2 dogs, 2 cats and fish. They are completely woven in the fabric of our lives...I recommend pet ownership to anyone with a space, a few extra bucks for food vet care and whole lot of love!

Love the post... and i only wish my pup was still around..Quinn was the family favorite... It still amazes me that there are people that could abuse these special creatures... as they are such gifts to us!

I love the photos. The last one showing the dog tail and the Christmas presents got a big smile.

Kristin, our dogs bring smiles even on the worst days.

Jill, dogs: a furry sedative I say.

Laura, somehow we always get the best looking dogs. These were thin, with almost no hair after being treated for mange. They have plenty of hair now as our vacuum cleaner will attest.

Joan, there are awesome dogs at the shelter everyday just waiting for you.

Gretchen, I wish we could get a couple more. I need a farm.

Carie, all these photos are of the same 2 dogs in their various states of groomed...or not.

Mike, Amen. These 2 make up our trio of rescues. Abigail, some sort of beagle terrier mix gave us 10 happy years before dying the perfect death. Just passing away un-assisted in our daughters lap.

These guys have been with us 3.5 years.

Thanks Maria and Donald!

Karen Anne you are priceless! I am holding my fingers off the keyboard since they are dying to try to make more analogies. I will leave that up to you.

Beth, good thinking. you know your situation doesn't permit you to be a good pet owner now. Too bad everyone isn't as thoughtful of the future.

Tammie...you need a back up dog or 2 I say. Just tell your husband. He will adapt.

Valerie folks like you who understand dogs can take on the tougher cases. Good for you. The older dogs often do not get adopted for the reasons you mentioned.

Lisa, these 2 dogs were pretty "whacked out" when we got them. The smaller older one which is the mother of the larger one was OK in a month. The younger one is still afraid of everything but has improved 200%.

Karen,  If I had more time I would volunteer at the shelter. Maybe this winter. Thanks for the compliments on the photo show. I need to get back in the video arena. I haven't done one in months.

Vanessa, exactly. Our pets are a seamless part of our lives that make it infinitely better. I do think it helps our marriage too. Dogs provide stress relief that might otherwise be improperly channeled no?

The only kind of dog I have ever owned has been a rescue - some from shelters and others from rescue groups.  These are the most loving, the healthiest, and the happiest to be home with you.  Great post!

Cheryl, that dog with the great tail is Penny Lane. She is hysterical and the tail is the worlds finest plume.

Jan & Steve,  thank you for your post.  Both of my dogs are rescue and they are our best friends.  I get so angry when I hear people spending hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars on "designer" dogs when there are so many beautiful dogs out there in need of a good home.  We had one dog about 11 years ago and decided to get a 2nd dog.  Jake was not happy at first since he had been the "only child" for so long but he tolerated Jones and eventually they became inseparable.  Eventually Jones started watching out for Jake as he got old and became blind.  When Jake passed we took Jones to the Animal shelter to pick out his new buddy.  We "interviewed" several dogs (butt sniffing, etc.) and he finally picked Hayley.  They have become best friends.  Now when I leave the house I am not feeling guilty because I know they have each other to keep company.

Michael. indeed! I am glad they let us live with them too :-)

C team, good for you guys. The reward is much greater than any effort required.

Margaret, our first came from the Fairfax County animal shelter. The next 2...mother and daughter ...came from a pet finders foster home.

Paula, when the time comes we will follow your example and let the remaining dog pick its next buddy. The 2 we have now are mother and daughter with the mother Penny being half the size of her daughter Ellie. Penny still rules though.

Great post! My "oldest child" came from the SPCA. He has been the best dog and companion for over 8 years. Animal abuse and abandonment is tragic. If there is any way to help these little guys out and give them a good home, I say go for it!

Steve congrats on the feature.  It is so easy to see how much you love and care about your pets and all pets.  Sometimes the pets that are the most stand offish at the pound turn out to be the best pets when treated with love.

Sandy, on one hand I like going to the shelter and seeing the animalls being adopted. On the other hand, I wish people's bad behavior made shelters obsolete.

Thanks Leslie ...it is worthwhile love both ways no?

Thanks Debra, the one dog we have the was "stand-offish" has come around in three years...she still is nervous as a cat though. Harsh treatment in the past does not fade over night in animal psyche. She must have been very poorly treated. She will eat one bite off food ...stop and look around to see if she is likely to be attacked. Any little noise makes her bolt to the next room. Having her mother with us has helped a lot. Her mother is afraid of nothing. Strange no?
