Jane, it is a beautiful tree, but as noted there are some safety issues! Do you know what type of tree it is?
Al & Peggy, it sure has. And try and get the City to come out and fix it.
Those look like trees from JUMANJI...probably has done some damage to the local sewers, too. Usually only one lawsuit is all it takes to get fixed here in NY :)
Maybe they should be cut down to the stump. God forbide people trip. We need FLAT sidewalks everywhere, can't have these trip hazards caused by gorgeous majestic trees. Get rid of them and let the people walk on a flat sidewalks!! Oh, and they drop leaves on cars. Probably have birds that nest and poop on cars too. Yup -- rip them out.
Marie, not so easy here. There is some law in place or ready to be in place where the homeowner is responsible for the sidewalk, but they cannot chop down trees.
Carla, nah. They are so pretty. :)
Oh dear, Jane...they should have nixed the sidewalks completely, like they do on county streets around here! Or at least "only" put sidewalks on one side of the street (in this case, not the tree side), so those roots can breathe freely. :)

P.S. Re Bruce's comment #18, I think the answer is no. Isn't a deciduous tree a deciduous tree, no matter where it's planted? If so, it should drop its leaves even in areas that don't have the four seasons, like L.A. But that's just a calculated guess...I'm no expert when it comes to trees! :)
It's ole and stately, simply beautiful. In time someone will complain and it will get cut down. Any idea how old it is?
Jane,
The trees are so gorgeous... I can only imagine how many years they have been there to get to that size.
Jane, deciduous trees are the ones that drop their leaves in the Fall. :)
I also hope they don't cut those beautiful baobabs down.

Try getting the city to do something about it. My folks have had to replace parkway trees in the LA area, and they had some probably not so unique experiences.
