How to get your pool ready for summer use.
It's rapidly heating up here in the Valley of the Sun and thoughts are turning to enjoying our pools all summer long. Now's the perfect time to make sure everything is in working order and your pool chemicals are balanced. With the rapid warm up of the pool, you'll need to pay more attention. Even if you pay a pool service, the sudden wind, dust and monsoon storms can play havoc on your pool.
First, check to make sure all your systems are in good functioning order. Check for worn out o-rings in the filter. Make sure your pool vacuuming system has no leaks or tiny holes.
Then, take the time to thoroughly sweep down your pool. If you have rock and waterfall features, be sure you get UNDER the features and into all crevices. Then, check your pool with a test kit or take a sample of your water into your local pool supply store where they will check your chemical needs for free. Before adding any chemicals, backwash your system and clean out all traps.
If you're not sure of the size of your pool - your pool supply company will ask you how many gallons of water your pool has - measure the pool end to end and side by side. Then, know the depth. Your helpful pool supply company has a calculation which will come very close. This is key when adding any chemicals.
If you have a salt water pool, there are still chemicals you need AND you still need to make sure your system is fully functional.
There are many great local pool supply companies around. In Scottsdale, we use Paddock and Leslie who both have several locations. However, our favorite for pool equipment is The Swimming Pool Warehouse, located at 14255 N 79th Street in the Scottsdale Airpark. When you're there, sign up for the email list and they'll send you notices of specials throughout the year which will really save you money.
And, finally and most importantly: check all of your pool barriers. May is national pool safety awareness month. Get a jump start by checking to make sure all gates close securely, there are no small breaks in the system, and all of your home's safety locks and windows screens are secure. Let's make this the safest year on record.
Please be safe and enjoy your pool.
