I've been thinking a lot about Grandmother today. Technically, she wasn't my Grandmother, though she is the great grandmother of my children on their father's side of the family.
Grandmother lived on a big farm in Massachusetts just over the Connecticut border. I only saw Grandmother on Columbus Day weekend every year, and usually I was pregnant (as in this picture) or had a brand new baby, as my children are two year's apart all born in March/April. Though I spent very little time with her each year, as the years went by we became good friends, if not "real" relatives.
I am thinking about her today because one of the weekends, one of the last ones, she kept staring at me as were were doing things together and finally she blurted out,
"I don't care WHAT "they" say about you...I LIKE you!
She must have said that three or four times that weekend. It cracked me up, because she never realized that what she was saying was that others didn't like me, and had told her so. I think that's called "a half-assed compliment", but it is a compliment that has always been one of my most memorable.
There will always be those who are quick to judge and who will look for any opportunity to be offended. And then there's the Agnes Piekarski's of the world who look deep into your soul and don't feel the need to agree with those who just skim the surface.
God Bless you for helping Agnes...
