I'm going to start off with the assumption (no comment necessary) that none of us EVER talks on a cell phone while driving because it is a distraction and it is not a safe thing to do.

 Right.

All kidding aside, in this business being glued to your phone is an unavoidable fact.  You have to be available 24/7.

But there are things you can do to make things a little easier when driving.

Some people like to use those little wireless micro ear attachments, personally I don't like them - I think the sound quality is awful. But they ARE better than the wired headsets.

I think the best choice is having a wireless mic/speaker combo in the dashboard of your car.  More and more cars are being produced with that option.

If your car (like mine) doesn't have that there is another way to go.  Motorola makes a Bluetooth mic/speakerunit smaller than a deck of cards that you clip to the sun-visor right above your head.

I got one as a gift last month and the thing has worked better than I could have hoped.  No worrying about something slipping or falling out of your ear and once it's turned on, there's just one large button that controls all the functions.  Nothing to fumble with - one push on, one push off and you never have to take your eyes off the road.

It's like the speaker-phone on your desk, just much smaller.

10 Comments on Increasing Cell Phone / Driving Safety

I have a speaker in my car, which allows me to drive while still being able to talk on the phone..

Thank you so much for posting this.  I am the WORST offender.  Never heard a cell phone ring that I didn't answer.  Although we think we are driving safely, our reaction time is very much diminished if a crisis arises.  I'm sure new laws will arise that will eventually prohibit driving and talking.

Now that we freed you up with one hand, if we can just find a way to get you from playing with GPS navigation system.

You forgot to mention that if you have Nextel's push to talk that the speaker phone can be a little scary at times.  Your driving along and then you hear someone talking to you out of nowhere, forgetting that you have the speaker phone setup in the car. :)

Hands free sets are the best invention ever made.  I don't know what I would do without one!

Wonderful Post! I love my Bluetooth that fits on my ear. I will not talk on my phone while driving w/o it. I'm not a big talker/driver to begin with as I don't spend that much time in my car so I figure it can wait until I get to my destination.

Remember though, that most accidents are not caused by your hands being off the job....it's your mind being off the job that does it.  One study was done that showed more people got in collisions while talking to a passenger than talking on the cell phone.  OK, I'm a former defensive driving teacher, and dweeb about these things and don't follow the "NO CELL PHONE" rule myself half the time.  Don't be thinking that the hands free is zeroing your risk....

To Everyone-

Thanks for all of your comments-

Like Chris said, this doesn't zero out your risk - but anything that helps......

I have the bluetooth earpiece and I like it but would be interested in the new product you suggest for my wife Monika.

Thanks Jay

Jay-

I think it's about $80 - it might be even cheaper now.  I know Best Buy stocks them.

Good luck!
