PCS to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda: Commuting Options - Where is the best area to buy or rent?

The base realignment of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the former National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, MD came with some big parking woes. Only about 25% of all troops and civilians working at WRNMMC have a parking pass to park on base.

Metro's Red Line Downtown Silver SpringBase housing is non-existent and Bethesda itself is a pricey Real Estate Market which the majority cannot afford. When the new parking policy was first implemented not many options were available. The best advice was, and still is, to find housing close to the Metro's Red Line since it stops across the street from WRNMMC/NSA Bethesda.

The Red Line loops all the way from Shady Grove in Rockville through Washington DC and up north through Silver Spring and Wheaton, it's last stop being Glenmont. A trip from Silver Spring to WRNMMC on the Red Line can take about an hour, not the shortest commute.

However, WRNMMC has added a commuter shuttle bus from the Downtown Silver Spring Metro Station to the base which only takes about 15 minutes. That makes Silver Spring, MD a great choice (again) for anybody PCS'ing to the area orDowntown Silver Spring - WRNMMC Shuttle already stationed here and looking to ease their commute. Commuter buses to the Red Line operate throughout the city, however, the residential areas along Georgia Ave are also in close proximity to several Metro Stations.

Silver Spring, MD has a lot to offer and is a great place to call home. It was a popular choice for troops before BRAC. The shuttle bus from Downtown to the base ensures that it will continue to be a great option. The Silver Spring Metro Shuttle operates from 5.30 AM until 6.30 PM daily and stops in front of the America Building.

I've helped many military families relocate to the area and buy or rent their new home in Montgomery County in general, Silver Spring and along Georgia Ave specifically. As a military spouse I not only understand the process, I've been there and done it myself.

If you have just received PCS orders to WRNMMC, I'd be happy to help you find your new home, too!

Andrea, Silver Spring, Md., is a beautiful place... I use to work at NOAA at East West Highway right at the metro center. It was a great location esecially when commuting to DC for meetings.

Hi Rebecca, I love Silver Spring and the area! There's lots to do and plenty of green space, too. The Metro's Red Line and the new MD 200/ICC make Silver Spring a great commuter location.

Small world :-)

Hi Andrea, Whether there is little parking..or in today's day wanting to save gas, Silver Springs sounds like it's in a great location. Ya know what they say..location, location, location! Excellent post to let people know about this! The military life is something that I've never lived. If anyone knows exactly how it is it would be you! That you walk the walk says volumes about how you can help others well when they are moving there.

Hi Cindy, I tell ya, the shuttle bus was just the greatest idea! I don't want to know how much time I've wasted over the last few years sitting in traffic on my way to Walter Reed. You can say I know that base very well, both my daughters were born there. And having had to relocate before.. I understand the process and all the pains that can come with it!

Thanks Chris Ann, the military life and WRNMMC Bethesda I know plenty about! Many times when I connect with new military families just about to relocate, it's a bit of a deja-vu: I remember our culture (read:price shock) 8 years ago all too well. This part hasn't changed at all!

Terrific and informative post about communting and lving options for those PCSing to WRNMMC Bethesda.  Our living woes aren't as expensive, but parking with the METC coming to FT Sam Houston and BAMC (SAMMC now) and the construction have caused all kinds of issues lol :)!  The BRAC sure can have an impact on bases, living and parking can't they :)?

Thank you very much Brenda! For the most part BRAC has had a very positive impact on Maryland. However, the parking woes just came out of the blue .. years of planning and they didn't realize that there wont be enough parking? It's a huge relief to see that they've implemented the shuttle bus service - Silver Spring is more affordable than Bethesda and it's now a great option again!
