National Arbor Day- Celebrate the Day!

It’s National Arbor Day but did you know that depending upon the state in which you live, you could be celebrating it in January (Florida) , early March (California) or November (Hawaii).   Many states observe their State Arbor Day to coincide with their best time for planting trees.

Arbor Day began in Nebraska in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton, an avid nature lover and advocate of planting trees who became Secretary of the Nebraska Territory suggested a tree planting holiday to be called Arbor Day.

So why trees?
Trees can... provide a variety of medicines.
...help provide clean air and water.
...offer shade on a hot summer day.
….add to the biodiversity of our planet.
….. can help keep your home cool.
…..provide the intangible benefit of making us feel good.

How you can celebrate?
Gather your family and plant a tree in your yard.
Learn more about the trees in your area.  Do you know what your state tree is?
Get out and head to the park.   Have a picnic!

Celebrate National Arbor Day!

Good morning Kathy,

A good education on National Arbor Day! Albuquerque is celebrating too in many different areas and ways. A great way to pay it forward or back to Mother Earth!

Have a great weekend in all you do.

Josh- thank you!

Gita- I didn't either but it depends on the best time to plant a tree!

James- you're not twisted!!!! But some of those daily words....well....

Laura- What does Destiny do to that special tree???

Wayne and Jean- As Lacy Bird Johnson said..."Plant a bush or a tree or a shrub."

BarbaraT- I'm not sure what those are...everything grows so huge here.

Gabe- absolutely.... you can celebrate even more that way.

Capt. Wayne- and i hope you have one as well.  Maybe sitting under a nice shade tree.

Scott- oh good, so you're right on target to celebrate.

John (QMan)- you have a lot of celebrations going on in Albuquerque!

Great reminder to us all! We are celebrating by planting evergreen bushes this weekend... does that count? Unfortunately, I have a black thumb, I think, as I've planted bushes twice before in this particular area and they died both times by the end of the summer. Or maybe it has to do with my dogs taking a leak on them?

Alexandra- yes they are... I forgot to mention how important they are for climbing.  I did have a favorite tree I would climb when I was a kid.

Karen- I'm sure I looked it up but I don't remember.  2nd Friday.. why couldn't they have waited 1 week???

Gretchen- I think evergreen bushes count!  I'd go ahead and blame the dog.

Hi Kathy, Raleigh is the The City of Oaks and it's the state capital, so I thought I could figure what the State Tree of North Carolina must be.  WRONG!  It's the pine!  That makes no sense.  We have huge, beautiful oak, maple, and hickory trees which give us shade in the summer and beautiful colors in the fall.  Pine trees mostly dust the world with pollen in the spring and drop pinecones and needles all year long.  Maybe the pine had good lobbyists?

Hey Kathy-I think I celebrate Arbor day everyday. I can not drive by a nursery without stopping. My new home is a blank canvass but for a big old date palm in the front. So after lunch with your BARFF today I will be planting trees!

Dianne- I know that the cabbage palm is the state tree of Florida, although to be honest, there are other palm trees here that are prettier, like the coconut palm or royal palm.

Marco-good grief, did you do your planting in the rain we had!

Hey Kathy, sorry I have been away so much!  Destiny planted her very own little pine and has fun with it all year long from decorating it for Christmas, to decorating it for the birds in the winter, to planting flowers around it in the spring!  She is very proud of her tree and cares for it all year long.  Take care my friend!
