Privateer (and Pirate) Day in Fells Point, Baltimore City.
It was a perfect sunny April day last Saturday, April 21st 2012 as Fells Point celebrated Privateer Day.
Baltimore is a water City with a rich maritime history. The national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" was written in Baltimore by Francis Scott Key after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy. The harbor remains a focal point of the City and a huge tourist destination.
So what is a Privateer? In short it's the governmental ability to deputize individuals and ships to fight at sea in war time. A cheap way to bump up the naval presence with less financial commitment. I'm not sure where the pirate participation came in, but no-one seemed to care!
Fells Point was alive with beautiful ships and many pirates. The activities for the day were varied and family friendly. From history to "Pirate" music, tours of the ship and a drinking tour of the local bars, there was something for everyone.
Here are pictures from the festivities. My little pirate had a wonderful time and wore his eye-patch for the next few days.
