New Years day comes only once a year. There are 365 days in a year.

It is a tradition for people to make New Years Resolutions each year. It makes you feel good. The idea of starting a new year and to become a new you is very enticing and inspiring. new years resolutions how to reach them

However, did you know that most all people have abandoned their new years resolutions by the third week in January? That is because of the failure and discouragement of past failures from resolutions that they did not keep.

Don't let past disappointments and mistakes keep you from growing and being all that you can be. Instead of making a bunch of new years resolutions that you know are just good intentions and will be dropped in just a few weeks, find your purpose and your vision.

These are the top resolutions in the United States and 47 other countries that were surveyed:

  1. Earn more money
  2. Lose Weight
  3. Get organized
  4. Manage time better
  5. Spend more quality time with family
  6. Reduce debt
  7. Help others
  8. Find soul mate or work on marriage
  9. Find a better job
  10. Quit Smoking

I think we all have had one or more of these resolutions on our list year after year. But why do we stop and give up on these well intended resolutions that are healthy and doable? Most people have no idea why they quit before they accomplished these resolutions. The rest said that they were not 100% committed to doing it, lack of self confidence, poor planning, lack of time management, lack of energy, lack of support and fear.

These obstacle are all ones that are reasonably remedied. If you reach out to others for support you will find support, if you get a coach to inspire you, you will be inspired to develop time management skills, you can read books on dealing with fear, there are just so many options that in the end these are all just excuses.

Resolution is from the word, 'resolve'. Resolve means to decide with determination and a fixed and firm purpose.  So if you are not 100% committed to reaching a resolution it is not then a resolution! You need to be 100% committed!  63.8% of the people surveyed said that the reason they quit their new years resolutions was because they were not committed. Well, then, that is not a resolution.  It is only a wish, a fantasy or an idea until you become 100% committed to that resolution.

The next most stated reason was a lack of self confidence coming in at 45.3% of those surveyed. The only way to build self confidence is through repeated action steps that lead to increased confidence. Taking baby steps towards a goal, feeling the success of each step increased one's confidence to take the next step. Many times there is more behind this reason than meets the eye. I have helped many people discover what is really holding them back.

You must break down your resolutions into bite size pieces that you can manage. Doing a little bit each day towards your goals is far better than trying to do it all in one day.

For instance, when I decided, resolved to eat healthier years ago I started one step at a time. I did not try to cold turkey all the bad stuff I was eating. I first took my whole family off of dairy milk. That was one small step that made a huge difference in my family's health. Then the next year we stopped all beef. As we got used to one thing we added another step. Eating healthy is a life long process. Now, we eat NO dairy at all, no beef, and no white sugar and no white flour. ( Except on Christmas). We also have included many healthy vegetables and fruits in our diet. We now use organics, no fast food or junk, no sodas and love to shop at Whole Foods.

43.1% said that poor time management was the reason they could not reach their resolutions. There are 525,600 minutes in one year and every single minute counts. It is easier if you decide ahead of time how you will spend each of those minutes. Once they are spent you will never get them back. You can replace money but you can not replace time. You need to figure out what your priorities are in order to reach your goals. So many times we are doing things that have nothing to do with reaching our goals. Most of us need to learn how to say 'No".

I will be writing more posts on discovering what your true passion is and what your purpose is. Once you know that and feel that it will propel you to reach your dreams and goals.

Stay tuned for the other reasons why we do not reach our resolutions and how to overcome those obstacles.

25 Comments on New Year's Resolutions- Amazing Statistics- Set Goals NOT Resolutions!

All 10 are worthy goals, but are they really a goal if not specific ? I think many have good intentions as we begin a new calendar year but with our meauring and specific accountability it is easy to fall short.

Those are some interesting statistics, Katerina.  I agree with your opinion on setting goals versus resolutions.  Resolutions are often too lofty or intangible.  A resolution is fine as long as it is accompanied by intermediate goals which are set to ultimately lead you to the desired outcome.  If you simply say "I want to lose weight" or "I want to make more money," you need to set specific levels of performance to make it achievable.  Otherwise, it's just a pipe dream, not a plan.  I really value and appreciate this series you are writing on success mapping.

Missy- No, that is the is the point of my post. These resolutions mean nothing and will not be met without belief, a plan, and a form of accountability. Thank you for adding to the conversation! Happy New Year! Katerina

Paul- Exactly! You know your stuff!:). People have all sorts of goals, resolutions and dreams and yet have no plan to get there. LOA works but it takes action! I'm not making any new resolutions this year.  My resolution last year was to stop spending money.

I'm just going to go with that again.  Until the real estate market is back in the pink, I'm saving every dime I can for the future.

This is such a good guide for success.  I couldn't agree more... you have to have a plan in place.  Without it, it resolutions are empty promises to yourself.  The key point you said is:

"You must break down your resolutions into bite size pieces that you can manage."

Success doesn't happen over night- one day, one hour, 10 minutes at a time!

Katerina - When my son was in college he was a personal trainer at a local gym.  He said early January always meant long lines for all the equipment and a crowded training calendar.  By the end of January things were back to normal.  Too many made a resolution instead of a plan.

Your perspective on life an business are always refreshing. Our family has a tradition of not making resolutions, but making "predictions". We all write down our predictions on popular culture, news, and personal activities. We roll up the papers and put them in the empty champagne bottle after we celebrate, then next year, we open up the previous year's bottle to see what came to pass - it's very entertaining!

Hi Katerina....Never Give Up, and it will happen, and put your goals and plans in written form.

Cheers, thanks for being you!

Katerina, what a concept!  You are so right!  Nobody keeps their New Year resolutions, but when we form them as written goals with concrete, measurable results, it happens!  Du-uh!  Thanks you for the reminder!

Lenn- We even had to stop remodeling right in the middle of it all! Because we knew even though we had made a huge amount of money during the past few years that this past year was going to happen and like you said you need to stop spending and save for the rainy year! Thanks as always for your comments! Katerina

Norma- Thanks for your comment. When we go to the gym in January it is so busy we just don't want to go, but like your son said, it all goes away by the end of the month! Crazy! All those dues you pay and don't go! Katerina

Chrissy-  That is so cool. We did a time capsule for 2000. That was a lot of fun! We will open it up in 2025. Katerina

I think one of the problems with resolutions is that they tend to be somewhat abstract, whereas goals tend to be measurable.  So, with that in mind - down with resolutions and up with specific measurable goals!  lol.
