UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER STATUE SURRENDERS TO MERCEDES

I didn't know the name of the statue.  It was always the sailor kissing the nurse.  The 26 foot tall statue is now laying on its side along Rt. 41 in Sarasota, Florida.  A Mercedes E350 sedan hit it and knocked out a three foot hole in the sailor's foot.

The car and statute were left together for hours making for a real head turner.  Officials were afraid that if they moved the car the statue would fall down further damaging it.

The statue will be sent back to New Jersey where the sculptor will do the repairs.  The big question is will it be back in time for the 67th anniversary, August 14, of V-J Day.

It was strange to see it when it was first displayed on the bay front.  Now it is going to be strange not seeing it.

Aw - no photo of the car with the statue?  I'm sure I can Google it.  Interesting story.  I expect the sculptor may rise to the challenge if given a deadline of August.

people first...then business

I saw a documentary or movie where this was displayed signaling the end of the war....It is a potent statement and is appropriate as a contrast...the opposite of war or killing.....a couple of people sharing a moment of intimacy

Cars sure find a lot of stuff to run into or should I say, drives. I wonder why they made that statue as tall as it is?

....Experience Isn't Expensive.... It's Priceless!

Good morning Conrad,

My fingers are crossed that the statue is back for the Anniversary...and I hope the driver of the car was not seriously injured!

She wasn't Lisa.  Apparently the 62 year old woman had gotten some kind of injection that she had a bad reaction to.  The result was a pain in the foot to the sailor.
