700 People + 3 Hours + Motivation = Walls For 6 Homes
If you wondered what happened to our usual morning post, well something else took priority today! We awoke to sounds of rain falling on the skylight. Normally a welcome sound, but this morning was the Build the Walls for Habitat for Humanity at Christ's Church at Mason! And long before the start of the event, the rain stopped! It was still breezy and a bit chilly, but we had clear skies and thought there was enough of a window before the next wave of storms to finish the project.
And the congregation and friends showed up in force!! The pastor's wife announced over 700 people were present. Last year we had 67 teams to build the walls for five homes, this year there were 87 teams to build the walls for six homes. We had the full spectrum, singles, families with young kids working together, and our seniors were there in force too!
After some food and some quick worship, Crossroads Missions members took us out to the parking lot at 9 a.m. to start the build. Everyone is assigned to a team number, so you find your spot, join the other team members and start following your assigned building plans. The Crossroads leaders provide guidance and quality control, and before you know it completed wall frame panels are being loaded onto the semi trailers!
We could see the big stacks of cut wood shrinking as the morning passed. And we could see the panels steadily going into the two trucks. One destined for Shreveport Louisiana, the other to Lanett Alabama, our six homes were part of over a 100 that Crossroads Missions will oversee this year. Another five were being built in Littleton Colorado today with other Crossroads members leading the way.
And towards the end we could see the sky to the west darkening, and everyone was racing to get the last wall panels done. A few drops of rain touched us, but nothing serious until about 10 minutes AFTER the build was completed and all the panels were loaded. Some divine intervention to keep the event dry? We'd like to think so!
So if you ever want to see what a crowd of motivated people can do in just a few hours, join us next year for the Build the Walls event! Who knows, maybe next year we'll build the walls for 7 homes!
And if you'd like to visit our church, stop by some Sunday morning. There's two services at 9:30 and another two at 11, and the services vary in style so there's something for everyone. Christ's Church at Mason is located on the southwest corner of Western Row & Mason Montgomery Road. Find out more about our church at www.ccmason.org.
