Western Outdoor News Tuna

Well, this posting is a little late, but I have to talk about my husband's latest fishing trip.

There isn't a lot of fishing to do in Southeast Alaska during winter.  Sure, hardy souls can spend hours out in the snow and chilly rain searching for the elusive winter King Salmon, but it isn't exactly fun, at least not to those of us who prefer to stay warm and dry.

Every year my husband, his father, and a few friends fish in the Western Outdoor News Tuna Tournament in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  Sometimes I tag along and do a little scuba diving, but other times, I choose not to.  Besides, sometimes the guys need some time without the gals.

This year, I was saving money for the down payment on my husband's Harley-Davidson motorcycle so I chose not to go.  Besides, you can only dive the same place so many times before you are ready for something new.

Wouldn't you know it that this is the year they placed in the tournament.

Congratulations, Dick White, Chris White (my beloved), Wayne Wilson and Mitch Falk on their 139.9 pound tuna, which placed 3rd in the 2007 Western Outdoor News Tuna Tournament.

Debbie, how fun! Me and my husband are avid fisherpeople and have always wanted to go to Cabo. Great tuna! Is the diving good there? We both are certified divers and have been lots of other places...Belize is my favorite to dive, but we've never done Mexico.

Cabo is decent to fair diving, but I've been to every dive site within an hour's boat ride.  Multiple times.  The sand falls are interesting the first few times, and out by the arches you can swim with the sea lions if you have some experience.  It was good for me because if I ever get dry suit certified so I can dive here, it's nice to know how they look underwater.

The best diving near Cabo San Lucas would be up the inner coast of the Sea of Cortez in Cabo Pulmo.  It certainly isn't fancy and the divemasters don't even check your certification, but I had a great experience diving there.  Corals were HUGE, and once everyone else ran out of air, I got to swim with a sea turtle all by myself.  I'm lucky to be a low-air user.  Must be those 7 years as a firefighter.

I learned how to dive in Fiji.  I really want to dive in Belize because I've heard it's fantastic.

Mean, Debbie.  Just mean.

Putting them pictures up while I'm sitting here wishing I could go someplace like that in the near future.

Ah well.  Maybe next year.

Congrats to your husband and his team on the tournament placement!

Erby - As I look outside at the cold wet snow, I kind of wish I'd gone too!  I don't go fishing with them.  I don't like fishing in the hot weather with huge ocean swells down there.  I'd rather fish right here in Alaska!

One big fish  Debbie !! congrats to your hubby on placing in the contest. Cabo has got to be heaven compared with Juneau this time of year.  Hope you get to go next time.

Bonnie - Thanks!  I just wasn't into it this year.  I haven't exactly had the best of luck finding someone to keep an eye on my son but he will be 18 in April.  Then I can travel with less stress.

wow - how wonderful - I have not been to Cabo - but I certainly love Mexico and the Caribbean

Thesa - Cabo is a serious drinking town - Disney for grownups.  It doesn't even seem like Mexico because everyone speaks English.  I personally like the smaller towns of Mexico, but as long as my father-in-law wants to do this tournament, my sweetie will.  After all, he's in his 70's and won't be able to forever!

Another Cow for the Cabo crew!  I love seeing those thriving tuna still coming in.  Fishing this year was terribly slow, but Cow Town has seemed to still produce.  Great job on the tourney and I will watch for them in my next WON.  Tight lines.

Thanks, Aaron & Mindy!  I was very excited for them.

Holly Molly, now that is a big fish indeed, can anyone say Sushi, or a slightly simmered slab of tuna. WOW -- Lance
