This morning I opened my Active Rain home page, to discover that I had a direct contact message. For those of you unaware, a "direct contact" is kind of AR's version of an "email"... someone wanted to send me a message, but didn't want to post it on my blog.
It was a flattering offer from a woman who said she's editing a book about Selling Your Home Quickly at the Right Price, and wanted me to contribute. She's already gathered 19 other authors from around the United States, and she's read my blogs, and wants me to author one of the chapters, and bring the number up to 20 authors.
How flattering... I'm flattered... I should be flattered, right?
The note goes on to say that each author has "exclusivity for their area"... exclusivity?? What's going on here... that doesn't sound like "authorship"... sounds like something's being sold here.
And it continues to say that the "marketing fee" to me is $500.00 up front, and another $250.00 when the books are shipped. For that privilege, they'll ship me 50 books, which I can then sell for $19.95 to unsuspecting victim .... er, I mean some of my clientele, and I can keep the profits as royalties. Of course, they tell me that many Realtor choose to GIVE the books to potential clients.
Now for most people, this is kinda tempting. I love to see my name in print. I've been a contributor, or interviewed contributor to several books, newspaper & magazine articles, and it's always fun to buy a few copies and give them to friends and family. A little tip of the cap to posterity, right? But this is more like those "Who's Who" books, where they charge you to be listed, and then add insult to injury by charging you for a copy of the book.
I'd love to co-author a book like this... and have one chapter, out of twenty... but I draw the line at paying for the privilege.
