Reasons for a Realtor to Run

This year, I'm putting some serious thoughts into my New Year's resolutions, my goals and objectives.  I am trying to be realistic.  The problem is that there is only 24 hours in a day.  So, in what ever I do, I need to make sure that I am getting the most bang for the buck - so to speak.

I want to: 1) improve my relationship with the Lord, 2) take care of my body, 3) be a better mom and friend; and 4) to build my real estate business so that I can help as many people as possible.  Oh, yeah, 5) I've also got some big horse related goals.   How do I realistically squeeze all this into 24 hour days?

At the moment, I'm considering the merits of running:

1)  It is a way to stay active.  Therefore, I would be taking care of my body.

2)  AFTER you are finished running/jogging, it typically feels really good.

3)  The Bryan College Station Association of Realtors sponsors a 5K fun run/walk every spring to raise money to buy shoes for needy kids.  I didn't join the committee specifically, so that I COULD run.

4)  Participating in 5Ks/10K's/fun runs/walks is a great way to contribute to various charitable causes while getting exercise.

5)  Preparing for a competitive run gives you a reason to get out and jog or run.

6)  It is a great way to meet new people.

7)  It is a great way to explore some new sights.  (I ran a handful of 5K's and 10K's a couple years ago.  In addition to the runs in the Bryan-College Station, Texas area, I also ran a race at the zoo in Waco and at the YMCA in the Conroe area.  There was a bunch of others in surrounding communities that I missed out on because I was not in shape.

8) Running can be a great way of working off stress.

9) If you run through different neighborhoods, you could find FSBO houses.

10) Many of the fun runs and races have a festive atmosphere afterwards.  There are drinks, snacks, prizes, door prizes, music...... It is  fun way to spend a few hours in the morning.  Of course, it helps to be prepared.

These sound pretty good to me.  Can you think of any others?  Can you think of any better options that might be a more fun way to get in shape and that would offer many of the same benefits?  (Horses don't count.  I'll never ever give up my horses. I'm looking for something in addition to riding.)

I tried to start a networking group that would meet and walk... didn't have any takers.  I hate running.  I don't mind walking.  Biking is even more fun... the speed junkie in me.

It is all about staying in touch and if you can listen to your body you will be able to hear that little voice when God talks to you. Great Blog.

Sondra - since you will be having fun, it'll keep you running.  Personally, I would rather bike, less pounding on the knees.  I also enjoy lifting weights, but you hit the key -- Have FUN doing it.

I don;t run...I ride a bike.... it is much less stressful on the knees and feet than running....

Exercise and a sensible diet are good things to make a habit of...

Hi Sondra -- I know running is a great fitness exercise as long as you approach it gradually and listen to your body.  STOP -- that's not what I want to do.  I want to listen to my thoughts and mumblings of God's Spirit while I exercise.  I know you can do this while running long distances (you know 40-60 minute runs), but I don't trust my body to run that far.  My husband used to do the Hawaii Ironman Triathlons (they run a 26-mile leg, along with a 100 mile bike ride, and 2.5 mile ocean swim).  I like exercise that permits me to think, and doesn't beat up my joints -- so bike riding (stationary or on the street) is my preference.

Hi Sondra, Taking good care of your body and mind is the most important investment you will ever make.  While doing this you will meet people of like mind that would love to sell or buy homes with you.  We're in an amazing business that encourages us to participate social activities because we can meet clients.  I like this much better than my last career where my work always got in the way of my social life.

Happy running in 2008!

SONDRA:  I've been talking to Julie Neerings about training for a marathon. My only problem is a an old injury in my foot. I need to check with my doctor to see if my foot is okay for running. I think that training for a marathon would be incredibly cool.

I'm so happy I met you this year. God bless you, my friend! May God give you all the desires of your heart!!!

Sondra, I've been running for over twenty years either by myself, with my wife, with others or in races. My only other suggestion other than to build up to it is also run indoors on treadmills. It helps on the bad weather days and keeps you consistent. It is very good aerobic exercise!

Terry Rasner gives some very good advice. I ran for years--currently I cannot but I still walk and I have an eliptical machine. The impact from all the years of running did plenty of damage. I'm a pretty big man and that is part of the issue. We're getting everything repaired but if I decide to run again once I am healed I will think about it differently. Not to be discouraging to ANYONE wanting to run--just be careful and consider your body type and get some professional advice. It sounds simple, "I'm going to run." Just do it right and be careful!

Happy New Year!!!

Lane, based on the comments I have received, it sounds like biking is a really popular option to running.  I'm glad found something that appeals to the speed junkie side of you.

Susan, You are right, I do like it when I run far enough that I seem to be able to hear God's voice/encouragement.

Aziz, I have yet to figure out how to make the weights fun.  Maybe it is a guy thing or maybe it just becomes a relaxing habit?  I do want my exercise to be fun.

Alexander, I'm glad you like the cycling also.  Sounds like you've got a lot of company.  Fortunately, my knees are still holding up.  My biggest problem is getting out the door.   Happy New Year!

Hi Terry, thanks for the comment.  Score another one for the cycling.  That is pretty cool that your husband competed in Hawaii Ironman Triathlons.  I think those people would have to be in the ultimate shape. Wow....

Lindsey, that sounds like an interesting program.  I hope it goes well for you and that the weather cooperates a little more than it is here.

Enrico, I agree with you that one of the benefits of real estate is that socializing is typically good for the business.  Thanks for commenting.

Hi Elizabeth, Thanks for stopping by and commenting.  I've always thought it would be cool to train for a marathon.  The foot could present a huge challenge.  Be sure to trust you doctor's opinion.  I hope your new year is off to a wonderful start.  I'm so glad to have met you this year.

Gary, Sounds like you are a REAL runner.  Treadmill would be good today since it is soooo windy and cold. Happy New Year!

Ken, you are absolutely correct in your comments.  I hope you get over your old injuries soon.

Sondra - I've borrowed my mum's treadmill! I wouldn't be running outside this time of year!!! :-)

When I wake up early to go running and am struggling to get out of bed then I ask myself this, "when have you regretted getting out of bed to run? Not once so get up!" It has worked for a solid year now.

Another reason for a Realtor (or Loan Officer in my case) to run is that no matter how bad the market is going, no matter how unrealistically demanding your clients are being, no matter what is happening out of your control, you can always slip on your shoes and hit the pavement. That is something (unless you have health problems of course) you have complete control over and there is nothing better to release those mind altering endorphins like running your guts out!
