Hey let's go to San Francisco...Ok, why not?
It was a typical Saturday morning doing routine errands. We had finished up what we needed to do and had a quick lunch at In and Out Burger. It was just a bit after 1 in the afternoon. Kelly and I realized that there was really no reason to go home. Her kids were all gone for the day and wouldn't be back until late Sunday. Of course there was always laundry and house work that could be done. But where's the fun in that?
So we decided what the heck, let's get out of town. The only decision that needed to be made was do we go east into the mountains or west to the coast? I guess the call of the Pacific Ocean was stronger this day so we headed to our favorite city by the bay, San Francisco.
On trips like this without any real plans we sometimes like to just drive around our destination and explore. That's what we did on this day. We drove around The City exploring some of the neighborhoods. We ended up finding the Coastal Trail at Lands End. The trail winds around and above the Pacific Ocean with some spectacular views of The City and the Golden Gate Bridge. Since this was one of our spur of the moment trips we weren't exactly ready to do a lot of hiking but you can bet we will be back.

From there we drove around some more and ended up at Alamo Square Park. Right across the street are some very famous ladies. You may have seen them on TV or in a Movie. In fact the whole time we were there they posed for dozens of people strolling by. Several tour buses also stopped as they drove by the park. I'm guessing these are probably the most photographed ladies in The City. Of course I am talking about the famous Painted Ladies of San Francisco.

We finished the day at our favorite little hole in the wall Italian restaurant Stelline. The food was great as usual and so was the service. I had the Spaghetti Gamberetti and it was delicious. We have been there several times now and every time has been a pleasure. I'm sure we will be back again.
It seems like every time we go to San Francisco we see something different. The City has several distinct neighborhoods and tons of things to do. People come from all over the world to see the sights in San Francisco. Living here in Stanislaus County we are lucky, we can on the spur of the moment hop in the car and enjoy a world class city.

Hey, anyone know how to get your blog as a featured article? I see you did a great job here on this one, and AR chose to make it "featured" Just wondering if you had any tips....
Jeff - It's nice when you can be there in about an hour and a half. Thanks for commenting.
Eric - San Francisco is one of my favorite places too. Thanks for stopping by.
Praful - I hope you make it back someday. It's a great city. Thanks for reading.
Jessica - I have no idea what the criteria is for features. This is my first feature. I have seen all kinds of blogs get featured. I guess you just have to keep writing.
Jim:
Visiting the City always recharges my batteries. It is so beautiful and there is so much to do there. For me and my husband, it is only a 20 minute BART ride to downtown SF.
This is how simple life can really be...a couple of grown kids out and about....Yes to your post
Jim, Have never been to San Francisco, but have never heard anything but good about it as a place to visit. Perhaps someday we'll fix that not having visited part :)
Here in Sacramento we hop on the Capitol Corridor Amtrak, go to Richmond and take the B.A.R.T. Then we walk San Francisco neighborhoods for hours. I love San Francisco, too. I love it even more when it's 115 in Sacramento.
Jim you have just made me so envious! San Francisco is one of my very favorite cities; my I would love to go back to visit.
I LOVE San Francisco! I lived there for about 2 years. My grandparents lived there for 45 years then moved to Sonoma. SF is my old stomping grounds as a preteen and early teen. LOVE the city. We have one son now who is the Chef de Cousine at the Famous Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill. I was blessed to spend 10 days there last October with my youngest son who is 9 and the son that works there is his favorite brother. We had a blast. We walked and walked those hills! Love it!
We walked all through China Town, Fishermans's wharf, the green market was fantastic, we walked almost all the way to Richmond. I spoke at the AREAA national convention downtown....
One of our favorite sites are the seals that hang out at the Pier:
Evelyn - I couldn't agree more. You could go to SF once a month and have a different experience each time. Thanks for commenting.
Richie - You nailed it, we are a couple of grown kids out and about, having fun.
Liz and Bill - I highly reccomend it if you ever get the chance to visit. The hard part will be what you actuallly want to see in the time you have available.
Elizabeth - Everytime the temp hits 100 I'm thinking about going to San Francisco or Half Moon Bay or Monterey.
Marie - It's a great place to visit. I hope you get the chance.
Katerina - I remember reading your posts from San Francisco. That's cool that your son is a chef in the City. Thanks for the picture. I think I recognize a couple of the seals.
I love spending the day in San Francisco. Such a pretty city on a beautiful day--- must have been gorgeous day there yesterday.
Susan - Yes it was a beautiful day in San Francisco. I love going over there when it's 105 here.
I was born in SF and raised in the Bay Area. A trip up to "The City" always meant there was plenty to do and see. I think that any day with out the fog is a good day in San Francisco.
Rob - It was a good day in The City, no fog at all.
Nice post Jim. I grew up in Ireland and landed in SF shortly after college, thinking I would stay a year. It was love at first sight. Having lived there for over 20 years, I was lucky enough to get beneath the surface. Yes, it is a beautiful city with lots of interesting sights to see and a wonderful mix of cultures. But what I carry in my heart now is the wonderful spirit of San Francisco, the caring attitude of the people who live there and fight for equality and justice for all. To me, this is what makes San Francisco so special.
Thanks Kevin. It is a great City.
Jim
Whenever I have guests to the Bay Area, I always take them to San Francisco, and we have an adventure following Scenic Drive 49
And always go to Alamo Square, Crissy Field and Palace of the Arts for those famous scenes.
Glad you haved a good time!
Jim , San Francisco is always a fun place to go, I am with Katherina & Nestor, love the pear with the Seals, we have our own here in Marina Del Rey, CA as well, they are very entertaining. BTW next time you go there go to Michael Mina's Restaurant Aqua, you will not be disappointed!
Pacita - I didn't know about the Scenic Drive 49. Thanks for sharing. I have been to SF probably about 10 times in the last couple of years and always find something different each time.
Endre - Thanks for the tip on the restaurant. I will have to check it out.
