Getting that once in a lifetime wildlife Kodak moment photo, isn't as easy as it seems. For some reason I just don't think the phrase, "Can you just sit still while I adjust my camera," is something they understand, or even care about.

I drive-by Sandhill Cranes all of the time, but as soon as you stop the car to take a picture they mosey on off. I was fortunate for this photo that it didn't see me right away, but by the time I was able to take the photo it had already started to walk away. I have a 500mm telephoto lens that I could use, which would allow to zoom in even closer, but after a 2 mile hike it feels like you've been carrying around a bowling ball.

Very cool to see them in their own habitat. Great to see these beautiful birds. Difficult to get close, so you did very well.

Thank you for sharing the photo with all of us.

Good morning Michael,

Lovely photo, I have been trying to capture some of the wildlife around my property...but I obviously am not adept at sneaking up on my subjects!

Good morning Michael -

We too enjoy Sandhill Cranes around Albuquerque.  The city grows fields to feed them so they are actually pretty use to humans as they feed in their protected areas.  I like the way they look when coming for a landing... very unique birds.  I'd sure hate to tick one of them off :)

Thanks for sharing your photograph.  It does pay to have a camera in hand to capture the special moments.
