I Believe in Greene

"I believe that Greene County′s strength is its sense of community. It′s a great place to live and work. The schools, public and private, are excellent. It′s also really beautiful." Listed above are quotes from some of the board members of the Greene County (Virginia) Chamber of Commerce. Their quotes were in response to our President's questions, "Why Do We Believe in Greene?" It did not take long for must of us to respond, and thus began our "I Believe" campaign. The question and the campaign came about because of a general consensus that our beautiful county was not always one in which people did believe. The rural nature of the county still on occasion leads to jokes about moonshine and kids who have to walk five miles to school, up hill, in the snow, etc. To be honest, our county is in a period of transition. Like many other rural communities, we are coming to the point where development has led to there being just as many "come heres" as there are "been heres". To truly be considered a native of Greene, it sometimes seems like your grandfather's grandfather had to be born here. What is most important to me, and the thing that makes me believe in Greene, is the fact that I see both "natives" and newcomers involved in discussions of what we want for our county in the future. Our growing pains include discussions regarding ideas such as property rights, rural preservation and smart growth. There are concerns for our infrastructure including water, sewer and roads, for our schools and for our emergency services. I believe in Greene because we are having these discussion now, before we outgrow our local services. By planning ahead, we can work to maintain the quality of life that we enjoy in our community.
