Body Language Ain't No Bull

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

While out and about my business Sunday afternoon in Flower Mound, Texas, I came upon this bull. They say 90% of communication consists of body langauge and this bull was out to teach me a lesson!

In the beginning, I was merely trying to get a photo of this magnificent animal. I had just closed my car door with camera in hand. The bull was obviously, going about his own business - until he noticed me.

The bull was either in the middle of lunch or needing an energy boost. I figured I was no threat and that he was okay with me standing about 2 feet away - besides, there was a fence between us, so that was okay, right?

Human nature tells you, showing teeth is NEVER a good sign - I stood there there anyways, snapping my camera taking Action. (All photos are in the sequence of what happened next.)

By now, the bull was showing some signs of irritation, after all, I was in his turf and not backing off.

In looking back at the photo frames, notice the eye, nose, tongue, feet stance, right and left horn pointed at me. I think this bull is saying, "I can't believe she's not backing off.... I better show her what I've got!"

Now they say sticking your tongue out is childish behavior - Storytellers have told us many stories that involved the use of the tongue and how you better beware. Remember "Little Red Riding Hood?"

Squinting eyes is never a good sign either. By now, I wasn't sure if this bull was saying, "You're not even worthy to look at me!" (Or was he sizing me up for lunch...)

I noticed the ear was keenly listening and the horns were moving. Although there was a great deal of stillness in the head, the rest of the body was speaking volumes!

Finally, the bull turned his head away from me - but was I safe?

Was he giving me that over the shoulder look?

I decided to walk in front of the bull and here's what happened...

We were squared off and he sized me up once and for good. The tension around his eyes was telling me, there's Power in Domination and if you're up to the challenge, so am I!

CHARGE! THE FOOT IS A POWERFUL INDICATOR WHEN THINGS AREN'T RIGHT!

The moral of the story is, we are ALL animals. We may not speak the same language, but when it comes to body language, there is a lot of similarities. Cultural diversity may have many differences, but when it comes to human behavior, there's an aggressive side to everyone.

A lot of dominance can be seen in the face but there's a powerful force of aggression in every part of the body. Eye staring, gazing, squinting, glancing over the shoulder, swift body movement, twitching, and kicking are just a few signs to watch out for. Invading one's space can be perceived as disrespect. Showing superiority can be used for or against you. Sometimes it's best to walk away... that's exactly what I did!

Body langague ain't no bull! Awareness is knowledge. Knowledge is power.

What a great analogy and series of photos. This guy was certainly trying to tell you he didn't want you invading his space. Nice work in taking the bull by the horns ( so to speak, and of course the pun is intended ).

Hi Patricia,

Interesting photo journey as the bull made sure you got the message. You are braver than I am...those big old guys scare me. I love how you turned the analogy into "general conversation and the importance of body language." It's so very true...those little cues can let us know how we're being interpreted - if at all. lol.

Patricia, forgive me, I have been a bit behind on comments to my friends....a few unexpected features had me spending time commenting to many new friends and I wanted to come back to my favorites with time and no pressure. Now I see like the Bull, having the mood and correct body language is key to communication, so my mood is good, and I'm sitting comfortably with my lap top and wanted to say love your photo's. I don't think I'd get that close to a bull as I prefer to avoid conflict, however if you bring it on, I'll stand strong and determined if its what I believe in.

Stay safe and out of the bulls rage!

Hi Patricia,  I don't know how long you stood there but I know one thing for sure....it was longer than I would have stood there.  The fence, although substantial, doesn't provide a whole lot of security.  But your pictures are great and fun to look at.   Your blog was no bull.  Enjoy your day and keep up the pace.

Great pictures, story telling and moral to the story.  And oh my -- those horns!  They must be weighty on ones head!

Debb,

The photo journey was fun. Of course, I didn't plan it that way, it just happened and I'm happy to receive so many nice comments. It makes me happy to know what I'm doing is appreciated. I have such a great appreciation for you and all the people here on ActiveRain that take the time to at least leave comments, especially, when I'm running with the wind, dodging occasional Texas rain drops, and simply running around doing my business, trying to make a living.

Since the journal entry, I've experienced a lot more body language that has taught me plenty! It's good to come home and take the time to reply to the most wonderful people I know on ActiveRain. You are at the top of the list!

Ellen,

Believe me, I understand! I've been still tangling with the Wells Fargo hold up, listing 3 more properties, and preparing for a closing. Sometimes, it's easier to tangle with a live bull than some of the other #&#$! that comes along! You never have to apologize to me! Good people like you need to be cloned!

Clint, it's funny that you say that! Actually, when this City Slicker first arrived in Texas, one of the first things I did was to pay a cowboy at the Fort Worth Stockyards, $25.00 to get on the back of his bull, and take a picture. I have no idea where the picture is, but it was fun! That cowboy (without any teeth) had the biggest grin on his face. I sure made his day!

Ironically enough, bulls don't scare me half as much as some folks!

Dan,

And that's the truth!!!

He got his point across, without piercing me to death!

I think it would have been great if somebody else was filming me, taking photos of the bull. I'll bet the full effect, of my eyeballs popping out of my head, at various intervals would have been hysterical to see! Communication works two ways!

Thanks Dan!

Jeff,

Spontaneity has its rewards and benefits! I couldn't have planned this one, if I tried. Everything just came naturally, exactly the way it should have. No photo shopping, cropping, or manipulation. It's the real deal, natural setting, actual account, as it happened.

As always, I look forward to hearing from you and all these wonderful people on ActiveRain!

Jack,

I stayed long enough to know when to quit! I wasn't the least bit afraid or nervous until I stood in front of him. When that foot started digging into the earth and he charged, I knew I better quit! Plus, there wasn't anyone else around for miles! I never even saw or heard a car or truck go by. That bull showed me a thing or two but I documented it in photo and it gave me pleasure just to share it here on ActiveRain.

I really enjoy hearing from ya'all!

Joan,

It was my pleasure. As I reflect back on the experience and on my childhood, I think understand better now why my parents favorite words to me were,

"Get back!"

"Don't do that!"

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!"

"Don't you have any brains?"

"SHE'S NOT FROM MY SIDE OF THE FAMILY!"

Patricia... what incredible photos.  Actually, though, many of those "poses" were not new to me.  I have seen many of them before.  I think it was during all of those Republican Presidential Primary Debates on TV.  <smile>

Seriously... great photos.  And yes... if we pay attention... there is much we can see and learn about the different, yet strikingly similar ways, that all of us use to communicate.

And... to commentor #1 above... yes, those "horns" were pretty darn long.  Ummm... that's why they call them "Longhorns!"
