Built Green type programs are becoming more the standard than the exception. Building America is part of the U.S. Department of Energy program. Next time you have the opportunity to be apart a Habitat for Humanity Home look at the standards in building they are using. I think you will be impressed.

For those who are interested:

The long-term goal of the Building America program is to develop cost-effective systems for homes that can produce as much energy as they use-a zero energy home.

Building America Homes have a Number of Advantages
  • Improved comfort-an energy-efficient building envelope reduces temperature fluctuations
  • Reliability-BA homes can be designed to continue functioning even during blackouts
  • Security-a home that produces energy protects its owner from fluctuations in energy prices
  • Environmental sustainability-a BA home saves energy and reduces pollution. Building America Homes Optimize a Variety of Features
  • Climate-specific design
  • Passive solar heating and cooling
  • Natural daylighting
  • Energy-efficient construction
  • Energy-efficient appliances and lighting

Rick and I have been involved with Habitat for Humanity, as an architect and now as a Realtor.  It is such an incredible feeling to be able to help build these homes for the less fortunate.

I have just been asked to write an article on "how Green is GREEN"  for a local paper here in Asheville. I took a break from writing this article to visit you and look what I found! May I add...

LEED-certified buildings:

  • are leading the transformation of the built environment
  • are built as designed and perform as expected.
  • have lower operating costs and increased asset value
  • are healthy and comfortable for their occupants
  • reduce waste sent to landfills
  • conserve energy and water
  • reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances, and other incentives in hundreds of cities
  • demonstrate an owner's commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility

George - Electricity is a renewable energy source. Why not check into putting photovoltics on the house? After all the sun is a very reliable resource. There may be tax incentives that would be of benefit.

Ines - It's nice to see the powers that be and our government useing some common sense in these matters.

janeAnne - You Rock! Great job. Any chance you will reprint your article on a blog? I would love to read it!
