2 Baby Birds Fell Out of the Tree

Last Wednesday I had my palm trees trimmed. While cutting off limbs they found a bird’s nest.

The nest fell to the ground and then the 2 baby birds fell out onto the grass.

Above picture; this is the old date casing that the nest had been attached to. Here is a picture of the contractor carrying it up the ladder and placing it back into a pocket of the trunk.

They put the nest and the babies back up in the tree.

Then the next evening we came home and found the nest on the ground but no babies. We were out in the dark with a flashlight looking and listening for the babies but there was still sounds up high in the tree. We think the birds may have fallen through and the wind or an owl pulled the nest down but not sure!

I believe the babies are still up in the tree and have fallen into one of the trunk pockets. There are several birds landing there all the time so I think they are alive plus there is a lot of tapping noises.

I moved the nest in a plum tree nearby. Perhaps another bird will adopt this nest.

Has anyone had any experience with birds being put back and living? I am not sure how many days before they will start flying out if they are alive? Anyone know?

Kristin, Oh how tiny and precious!! I am guessing they will be just fine.  Mama bird will keep bringing them what they need to grow and develop...and hopefully you can fill us in when you see two young birds testing out their wings!!

Hi Sonja,

I am keeping a close eye on the tree as it is very near to my home office. I can hear the tapping so that is good. I will add a picture of the babies flying if I see them.

Thanks for stopping and Happy Monday.

Kristin,

It sure sounds like the babies are still alive.  I sure hope so.  Hopefully the momma is building another nest.

Kristin, I was always told not to touch a bird's nest or babies with bare hands, use gloves. Hope they have survived.

Hi Paula,

I sure hope so too. My family laughed that I was worried about the babies but I cannot help it. Fledgling feathers and muscles are typically ready at about 10-14 days  and begin leaving the nest so I am going to keep an eye on them. I think they may have been about 2-3 days at the time of falling.

Hi Wanda,

The contractor was wearing gloves so he just swooped them up off the grass and back into the nest and up they went. Everyone was so upset. I keep reading a mother will return to the birds and our hands did not touch them but just the gloves. I guess they have a 50/50 chance at this time.

Kristin, I hope the cute baby birds survive with the care of their mother. In our area, sometimes you find snake on the palm tree.

I have seen people rescue baby birds and have some luck in raising them.  I haven't been one of them, but I haven't really had the opportunity to try.  However, when I had my trees trimmed several years ago, two baby squirrels fell out of a nest.  I took care of them, and they did ok.  But what an adventure.

Hi Kwee,

One of my neighbors said there might be rats in the palm trees. I said not in my trees! I hope the birds make it too and I am gong to be watching for test flying next week.

Hi Myrl,

My contractor did not even ask me but just rushed up the ladder. I am sure he is right as I would have probably killed the little birds. I cannot image me crushing up worms and feeding them every two hours. I have not problems handling the worms but cooking with them; not sure.

How exciting that must have been to take care of baby squirrels and have them survive. I usually hear bad ending so it is nice to hear one time an animal rescue went well.

Hi Kristin.

That is a very moving story of two tiny birds.
