I pulled up to the house I was showing about 10 minutes early. It was a pretty mild day here in NH and I noticed a big shiny Harley boldly parked in the middle of the drive. I got out of the car to stretch and enjoy a rare warm 55 degree January day...unusual temps for us!  As I did so a woman came out of the garage and approached me. I asked her if I was blocking her in...since I wasn't expecting a co-broker to show up I assumed she was the seller and would be leaving.

"Nope" she said.

She was dressed in jeans, big heavy work type boots, tank top and denim jacket..she had on lots of big silver jewelry and a big heavy looking chain link type belt around her waist. She held a key ring in her hand full of keys...so many keys it makes my hubby Jay's key ring look petite and he easily has 10 keys or more on his...anyway she clipped the keys to her waist and came to stand near me.

I introduced myself and told her I was here to show the house.

She said she knew that and mumbled her name...which I couldn't hear.  I felt stupid for having said something as lame as I'm here to show the house...which is just as bad as saying "This is the kitchen...the bathroomblah...blah as if you can't tell it's a kitchen...a bathroom. Talk about a dumb thing to say.

Me..."I'm a few minutes early"
She.."Yeah...I figured" now I really felt stupid!
Me..."Buyer should be here any minute"
She.."Okay" and light's up a Marlboro and I admire her nose piercing....little cute tiny diamond (looked real) as the smoke comes out her nostrils.
Me..."Sure is a Nice day for a ride"...I'm trying to make small talk.
She.."Yup...sure don't get many like this... this time of year" I watch as she expertly handles the butt between her fore finger and her thumb....she smokes like my son does. As a former smoker...I notice those things. I also notice to my dismay that close up she doesn't really look any younger than me. Certainly more comfortable but no younger.

Her cell phone rings and she crushes the butt out and excuses herself to take the call....mumbling it was her husband calling and that he was out on his bike and she was joining him.

While she's jabbering away on her cell my buyers drive up.  Now I didn't catch her name so I figured I'd just quickly wave to her and take the buyers and go inside...

She.."Hey wait up will ya" she hollers.
Me..."Oh okay.. we were just going to go ahead inside"
She.."Naw I'm done...lets go" and she extends her hand to the buyers and introduces herself as the listing agent of the house.  Me...I had all I could do to not crack up laughing.

It was a pretty hilarious showing and I never ever would of pegged her as an agent...afterwards my buyer asks me if she was new or something..or maybe this was a part time job as she just didn't look or act like a real estate agent. I didn't know how to respond.  But Yikes..I thought to myself...how true!  I wanted to ask the buyers just how did they expect a real estate agent to look and act...but I didn't.

So it got me thinking about NAR's Field Guide to The Polished Professional ...because when I first read it I laughed and thought how backwards of NAR to publish something like this...In fact I thought maybe it was a throw back from the 50's or something. I'm still not sure if its not a joke....Did NAR really need to make suggestions on how REALTORS should dress??

Have you seen the Field Guide to The Polished Professional??

National Association of REALTOR®S field guide...Pointers for Becoming a Polished Professional.

(the bold is my added commentary)

Keep your wardrobe up to date with age-appropriate and stylish clothes in your correct size.Choose colors that flatter your skin tone and hair color....Good Grief..age appropriate...do I have to dress like my mother did?? Jeez I should even strive to make sure my clothes fit...and are stylish what a novelty!  Flatter my skin tone and hair color...yikes I just wear what ever colors I like...plus my hair color changes often...I can't afford to buy new clothes just to match it.

Enlist the help of a salesperson or personal shopper at your favorite department store.Or, if your budget allows, hire an image consultant...Are they serious ...a personal shopper??? I know the code of ethics says that if I'm not competent I should engage the assistance of someone who is and who can help me  but jiminy christmas... I'm a real estate agent...not a millionaire!

Shoes should always be polished and the heels in good shape; no sneakers or flip-flops while on the job.  No Flip Flops...I have pretty feet even when I don't have a pedicure, I just can't get rid of my flip flops and sandals! They make gorgeous sandals nowadays ..I'm just not getting rid of them even if that means I 'm a not professional!!!

Makeup and perfume should enhance, not mask. Get a professional makeover at your local cosmetic counter to find out what best suits you. Is this a joke...I wear make up to hide my imperfections...not enhance them LOL!

Get regular haircuts and keep facial hair well-groomed.  Well okay I agree with that...my hubby has a beard and I like him hairy but trimmed.

Make sure that your nails are clean and manicured. Ummm....I don't need NAR to tell me to do that...do you?

Jewelry and accessories should be modest, not flashy or distracting. I love my Jewelry and my motto has always been the more the better...what fun is it if I have to keep it hidden???

Keep your smile nice and white - don't let it betray your age or your habits.  Hmmm...promoting teeth whitening...I think! Does NAR hold stock in  teeth whitening companies too??

Always use proper grammar. Use of slang, profanity or improper grammar shows your breeding and education, or lack thereof. Breeding and Education..oh my...really breeding? I  jus dunno!

No gum chewing or smoking when you're with a client - it's just rude.  I agree 100%...hey how about No answering your cell phone when you talking with a client..."oh excuse me Mr. client while I take this call cuz he's more important than you are"

Mind your manners - open doors, extend small courtesies, and say "please" and "thank you". Okay I like it very much when my husband does that...his mom taught him well.

Get some exercise. You'll stand taller, and exude confidence. Gimme a break...get some exercise??? Stand Tall..that's my  mom talking..not NAR...is it? She used to tell me stand tall or you'll get grandmas hump....

Express your personality in how you dress, but do it subtly. There's no need to be a carbon copy of everyone else, but leave the exotic animal prints and the loud plaids at home. Express my personality...I wish I had taken a photo of that agent...she was definitely expressing herself.  Does that mean I don't have to dress appropriately and wear stylish clothes???Sounds a bit contradictory...no?

I guess I just had one of those days...

I've never heard of the Polished Professional handbook!  Too bad we have to be told how to keep ourselves neat and clean.  Maybe the showing was just a little blip in her day and she didn't think it would be worth her while to change:)  Wonder if the Sellers know how she presents? Nice blog, Monika

"The Lovely Monika"

Yes. I have seen the NAR Dress Code before.

I still think the same way as when I first read it...

"Yah. Just what I need NAR telling me how to dress for success" :)

I need that like I need a hole in my head. SVW

TLW "The Lovely Wife"...NAR Does NOT Get To Tell Me How To Dress. NEXT. ROAR!

Allison...Thanks for the comment...a day in the life of a real estate agent...you just never know what will happen.

Karen..She was pretty bizarre to say the least and I felt pretty stupid thinking she was the home owner. Thanks for reading my post Karen.

TLW..I know just what you mean...when I first saw that guide I really thought it was a joke...appartantly some people do need the guidance. Good grief! Thanks for commenting!

Moni: :-)  everytime someone tells me to do something I so want to do the opposite. lol@   your commentary. I do smell a conspiracy; you reminded me that across from our training center at the corporate office? Is a tooth whitening dentist/whatever! I bet that gal gets a kick out of pretending to be the homeowner. Maybe she's writing a book LOL

Carole...I'm with you, I just want to do the opposite. I still laugh when I read the field guide...sound so basic and old fashioned in many ways.

Maybe she was writing a book, we certainly kept a straight face during the showing hard as it was!

I agree 100%...hey how about No answering your cell phone when you talking with a client..."oh excuse me Mr. client while I take this call cuz he's more important than you are"

That was my favorite comment!  I had it out with a former sales manager who told me I had to answer my phone at all costs - when I am with clients, in the middle of a personal moment, and yes, even in the shower.  Not gonna happen.

Monika - WOW!!  I've never heard of that dress guide, and I can't imagine an agent showing up looking like that!!!  I wonder if it's someone I know or have heard of.......   ;-)

Over on RT, they've been having discussions about appropriate professional attire, and I thought some of THOSE of comments were funny - this one takes the cake over an of those!!!

Wow - way to make us look good so we can rise above lawyers and used car salespeople...

Could it be that she fits in perfectly well with the clients she deals with.  Many younger people might feel much more comfortable working with her, than with a "traditional" agent.  Maybe that's her niche.

Monika - OMG - this really cracked me up - I had not read  The Field Guide to The Polished Professional - it is way too funny and now you wonder why we need more education in this profession.

Well - let me tell you about your biker chick - in Miami, it would be absolutely normal and well accepted.  The ones that wear suits and ties are the ones we look with a strange gaze.  The most common attire here for Luxury homes, is jeans, a t-shirt,  flip flops and designer eyewear.  It's about being yourself and feeling comfortable.  Last year I showed a listing of a known agent here in my area and she drove up in her Harely.  Her jeans were so tight, she could not dismount the bike - I had to turn around so she would not see me laughing.

When we owned our own business I came real close to firing an agent who when in a conference with customers would pick up his cell phone and start talking to whoever was on the phone like the customers in front of him weren't there. That was so offensive I told him the next time it happened he would be gone. Some people just don't get it. He does not sell real estate anymore, I wonder why? How rude can people be.

How the x&*&^%$ can you trust anything that is called The Field Guide To The Polished Professional? I'm still in stitches about that title. I don't say much about dress codes except for that handsome agent I had in tennis whites when I was in my 20s (well, I mean HAD him as my agent, before you make cracks LOL)  I personally think if you are showered and clean of clothes, its ok. I do know that in other markets (and even with certain clients or new ones) I dress up a bit more.

A Field Guide...sounds like bird watching :-)

Moni K,

I just came across this Blog and I am Laughing so hard right now. I loved the commentary about NAR's Suggestions. I have to say that I actually dress better now then I ever have, I know that it does not matter if I am on my own time or so-called company time, I may meet a Client, and I figure....I may as well use my looks while I still have them..;o)

Ann...If you're thinking of someone we both know well and whose name begins with a B...LOL it is not her. This woman was not at all lady like...she really cracked me and I would not want to p**s her off. The NAR guide is real...word for word as I posted except my commentary in bold! I tell you truthfully I thought it was a joke when I first saw`it... "Keep your smile nice and white - don't let it betray your age or your habits." LOL!!!

Well John... She could fit in perfectly well with the her clients..I really don't know them but she was not a young biker chick LOL when I saw her up close she looked about my age..but don't ask cuz I won't tell you how old that is. :)

Ines...I think I'd like in working Miami..flip flops rule...yeah baby! I'm all for dressing for your market...but this chick trust me was not dressed for her (our) market...the poop kickers she had on her feet were better suited to shoveling horse dung out of a barn.  I PMP...thinking about that biker chick in  jeans so tight that she couldn't dismount the Harley!!! OMG !

Jay...I remember that agent. He didn't last very long did he?

Hello Sue from Maine (my Favorite vacation destination)... You probably can buy that tee shirt !! I really thought she was a nosy home owner...I was not expecting the listing agent at the showing. So that freaked me out a bit!

I had to read that twice Carole...about having that agent in tennis whites...LOL my mind went where ya told it not to! Polished Professional  what a title huh?

Moni K,

Thanks. It was a long hard battle that I fought TWICE in 2 years. I lost it once, then gained it back with 20 more to boot and then lost it gain, this time I have kept it off for the last 9 months. There is a "Before" Picture of me on my New Years Resolution Blog. You won't believe it was me. This time around I am a lot more diligent because I know I can gain it back FAST. It has been a Long, Hard Battle :) I guess I could always Become a Biker Chick if the weight doesn't stay off...LOL

Monika,

Thanks for the post. Pretty disturbing from where I stand. From what I gather it was not only the attire, but her attitude as well. I still maintain the bar needs to be raised. This was not a positive image of our profession, as attested to by your buyers.

Hi William...I agree we can joke about it and have fun but the image she presented was not professional.  I was taken back...enough to come home and dig up the field guide. I thought of mailing it her but instead I blogged about it.

Jeff...Thanks..the showing was hysterical and the only thing better would of been if she started blowing bubbles with the gum she was chewing.  Love that guide...LOL ! Thanks.

Laurie...I am still laughing over it! Thanks fro reading.

Randy   Truth be told I saw nothing bike related in the home she was showing and trust me in my part of NH that type of attire is not at all customary...for real estate agents anyway!

Carole ...A missed opportunity but look at the memory it gave you :)!

We have one fellow REALTOR that shows lakefront property all the time in his shorts and sandals during th esummer months. In this instance it works for him, he is very succesful.

I have seen in other areas where people dress in jeans and ratty clothes and to them it's nothing, seems to happen in the more rural areas. To each his own I guess.

I dont know if I will ever stop laughing!  Your comments to NAR's are hilarious.  While many think it is appropriate here in Hawaii to show up with flip-flops (slippahs) I still think it is unprofessional.  I have a hard time agreeing with shorts rather than slacks also.  I know we have what is called "aloha attire" here but some folks go a little bit overboard when choosing the comfort level of their clothing.

Intersting, definetly a memorable showing, but a bit disturbing. Even IF her prefered clientele would have been Harley Owners. Aside from being unprofessional - the majority of Harley Owners is no longer the "Biker Gang" type - according to Harley - the majority of Owners are Professionals, to include Doctors, Lawyers etc. So unless you are "out riding" - I'm sure they do not dress like "your" agent when at work.

Sabine...I know a lot of Harley owners..my son is one and they are some of the nicest people going!!! I think she just wanted to ride and dressed for it but really the rest of her personalty was pretty blunt and kinda rough. She probably would of acted the same in a suit and heels..

I accompanied one of my listings this morning that was being shown by a co-broke. When they arrived the agent was wearing blue jeans and construction boots and the buyer was dressed very nicely. It was funny because the buyer was looking at the property for her horses, that was why I thought the lady in jeans was the buyer.

You just never know....

Monika -- it was a great time.  I had my map and list all plotted out.  I was bundled up with Jeans (dark blue) a turtleneck, and jacket.   It was cold out (ok 65 degrees but on a bike!) We started out on Marco, went way out into the Estates by Ava Maria University and then all the way down to Everglades City.   Not rural enough for him.   Must go further out--and since it was a friend he was ok with me not previewing before.  Now I have to reach out to some realtors in Everglades City -- guess a few Active Rain Invites are in order!

65 degrees is NOT cold...my biker chick was riding in 55 degrees..I know on a bike it might be a bit nippy :).

How long of a ride was that for you and was it your first time on a bike? We drove down there to buy crabs and we took a boat ride out of there too...air boat thingie saw some funny wild pigs! Scary looking things.

Well, this just wouldn' t cut it in the California Desert.  I remember driving out here looking at houses during the summer (120 degrees), when this agent shows up in a bikini top, short (way too short if you ask me) shorts and flip flops (they're thongs out here btw).  Now I was a Realtor from Laguna Beach (yeah the show on MTV) where you wouldn't think of walking to the mailbox in anything but Prada or those other high-end not available at Target fashions.

When I arrived home I immediately started telling everyone in the office about this Realtor, the nerve of her to show up dressed like she just left the strip club and in front of a client no less.  Don't these desert people have any class or pride in themsevles.  The following week I'm back out in the desert and this time the male Realtor shows up in board shorts, flip flops and a tank top (wife beater out here).  I'm starting to think these Realtors don't make enough money out here.  Come on I know it's the desert but a nice pair of shorts, polo shirt and loafers of some type will do.

Fast forward 3 years later and guess what, I'm almost one of "those" people.  I wear a nice pair of shorts and polo shirt, but the loafers are way too hot so I stick to my Birkenstocks.  Some days you'll find me in board shorts and a  colorful t-shirt or if you happen to be stopping by the house minus the t-shirt and standing in the pool.

Wonder what NAR would say about that.  It's geographically appropriate attire if you ask me.  Then again they didn't so I'll keep my mouth shut.  Well, maybe!

ED...LOL. I'm all for dressing for your market..albeit the bikini top and short-shorts might of been too much.I must ask you...What are Board shorts?? Never heard of that... is it a brand of shorts your board of REALTORS put out?

Ines...Did you sell the house? Pareo and Flip-flops...I love it!  Yup that is dressing for your market :)!

We did not sell the house that time Monika, but we were on the boat with some friends from Atlanta (she is a CEO of a big company there) and she later admitted that she was so jealous that I could work from the boat in a bathing suit.  I LOVE THIS BUSINESS!!

LOL... I hear ya Ines....yesterday I showed the house I fell in in dressed very casually...I was dressed for the weather.

Where else can you hop off a boat and show a house and then continue your fun stuff...a little work a little play...negotiate an important contract while balancing in a kayak in the middle of a lake...I love the freedom of this business!

Thanks Lillianne...I still laugh thinking of it. But reading NAR's guide to a polished professional really did me in!

I think we have to dress so that the clients we are with are comfortable

I will tell you this if I'm dealing with a large tract of land I'm in jeans and boots--because the heels just aren't going to do it--I walk the property with the owner not look form the sidelines

I also ride a harley--and I will meet clients that ride and we will ride to look at properties--If I'm with 1st time buyers i dress down and sometimes in jeans I've had several clients tell me that I don't intimidate them at all by over dressing

Then I have clients that I would never put a pair of jeans on with because I don't think they own a pair

For all you know at the last minute her clients called her and asked her to be at the house and she was already out on the rode

When things like that happen--we have to remember 2 things--we aren't here to judge others lest we be judged and the Serenity Prayer---WE CAN ONLY CHANGE OURSELVES

Professional dress is different in every market--with different clients--price range--and area of the country

It is up to us the individual professional to READ OUR CLIENTS and present ourselves in the way that THEY are most comfortable

Thanks Margaret.  I agree and advocate dressing for your market and that is very different from area to area. This whole showing was pretty funny and definitely not the norm!

Did you read NAR's guide to a Polished professional? I still can't believe that it is for real...hysterical!

Thanks for commenting.

Great post!  I once called on an office that had this guy who would wear ties that were wide enough to land a jumbo jet on.  I remember wondering who would work with this guy who dressed like a clown.

One day the agent calls and asks if I can come by and get a client of his pre-approved.  I walked in and the client stood up to shake my hand and he was wearing a tie even wider than his agents!

It's true, there is someone for everyone!

I hope you did think it was interesting and not find it offensive. I cracked up with NAR's guide to a polished professional and like I said the listing agent looked a lot more comfortable than I did. Can I ask you a question...how covered are you in tattoos?

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Monika, It's a shame you couldn't publish a picture of the Biker Broad listing agent. You description was great but a picture.....

I believe in being comfortable. Casual is OK in Southern California.

Hey, this is pretty funny.  On the other hand, I showed up at a listing presentation on Friday- looking all professional (as usual) and the homeowner (of an extremely large and upgraded home) almost made me feel kind of bad about being so dressed up.  She mentioned it a few times and the fact that they are very casual people and that I never need to feel like I should be "dressed up" when dealing with them.  It was kind of strange.  I believe presentation of a person is extremely important, especially a professional (even though I know you shouldn't jusge a book by its cover).  I think in the end though she was impressed and my attire may have helped me get the listing, because she knows I mean business.- (It's not signed yet but I am expecting the lisitng contract to be signed next week)!

Kim...I hope you get that listing. That happened to me a few times. I was overdressed based on what my clients expected. Like you I was able to overcome it and end up getting the listing. Personally I'd much rather be overdressed than under dressed. Thanks for stopping by Kim.
