What Women Want

By
Real Estate Agent with EXP Realty, LLC

What do women want?  How is this relevant to real estate?  Well, if you are asking how this is relevant to real estate, maybe you should simply move on to the next post.  You are probably hopeless.

Movie Cover for What Women WantWhat Women Want, the romantic comedy with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, does a wonderful job exploring this question.    The movie is funny in that it is so true.   Mel Gibson’s character is in advertising and the company he works for realizes that it needs market to women.    As a female, I found it hilarious watching Mel Gibson shaving his legs and trying to think like a woman.

So, what do women want?  Do you think you know?  Let’s just say you are working with a female buyer.  Is she going to be interested in a gorgeous bathroom or a well-appointed kitchen?   Maybe, maybe not.  She might be a horse person who is more interested in a nice barn.   Making the assumption that she will be more interested in the kitchen is just about as risky as a man buying his wife a vacuum for Valentine’s Day.    Granted, she may be thrilled to get a new vacuum cleaner, but she probably won’t be.  Vacuum cleaners aren’t exactly romantic and Valentine’s Day is a romantic holiday.

So, HOW do you know what a woman wants?  Just ask her.   Then listen to what she says.  At the same time, let her know that you appreciate her.  Women want to be appreciated.   Mel Gibson finally learns that in the movie.

Actually, this advice is true for all buyers.  What do buyers want?  Ask them.  Listen to them.  Let them know that you appreciate them.

Buyers, if you are looking for horse property or a rural house in Colorado, please do not hesitate to call me.  I will listen to you and help you find what you want.

Sincerely,

Funny you said this, as I am not sure Mel Gibson learned it in life. Seems like in real life he is not quite a role model

(LOL)

Sondra - men and women really are different. I've found never assume your man knows what you're thinking or what you want. They need you spell it out for them. Great analogy for real estate and buyers - never assume, always ask. Fun post!

Now, this reminds me of this song by Bryan Adams.. " To really love a woman, to understand her, you gotta know her deep inside.. hear every thought.. " Classic, I'd say.  I'll keep your advice in mind, thanks!

I try to learn really early, what she is looking for in a house, and then I work towards fulfilling her wishes. I know that we (Men) have nothing to do with the final decision, no matter what some of us think. Get to know what she wants, and you are guaranteed a sale.

Sondra. You are so right about "What Women Want". I am certainly not good at reading minds, so asking them is the only solution. But, we certainly have to be listening, and paying attention too.

I remember this movie from many years ago and it truly was funny. It was interesting thinking about the standard thing we think women want, nice kitchens, big pantries, and with the men a good garage and yard but when you asked your question, I thought, ask them, which is what you said. We all are different, so true. Diamonds, women want jewelry, or is it a fast horse? True what Kamal said in his comment, women get the final say on a house. They can veto anyone else's vote with a thumbs up or thumbs down on a house. I think it is their nesting nature for the home.

Sondra:  I agreed with everything... until:  How do you know what a woman wants.  Just ask them.  And then "Listen to what she says."

The majority of men can do everything... if they try hard enough... but actually "listen."  Perhaps it it just a genetic kinda thing.  And unfortunately, for Realtors... at least for too many of them... the same may also be true.

Home you are well, Miss Sondra.  Take care...

Hi Sondra,

I agree this is a great analogy to real estate!  It is funny sometimes watching the dynamics between a husband and wife during the home shopping process.  And sometimes not so funny...

You summed it up pretty well...women, like anyone else, just want to be appreciated. You really said it when you said to just listen. Really listen to hear what your buyer wants.

Sondra,

No doubt that both men and women have to be in agreement when purchasing a home.  However, Cherise has noticed that women do have a great impact upon the buying process of real estate... c
