British Columbia is Now 150 Years Old in 2008.

It has been 150 years since the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia and the same for the China Town in Victoria BC (Canada's oldest China Town, only San Francisco's China Town is older). Other Land marks in Victoria are such as Hatley Castle, built by the coal baron James Dunsmuir and the World Famous Empress Hotel, designed by Francis Rattenbury and now called the Fairmont Empress. Victoria's own world renown Butchart Gardens turned 100 in 2004.

These anniversaries will have personal meaning for many people. Victoria and British Columbia will be a popular tourist destination for many people in 2008, With these type of land mark local real estate attractions, they are already popular with many Travelers from around the world.

The Empress Hotel is already planning a Centennial Tea that will be priced at $100 per person. The Butchart Gardens is also planning their 150th anniversary with a list of 150 things to do at the gardens starting next year.

Communities around BC are also making plans as the BC Provincial Government is offering grants up to $10,000 to non-profit groups to who want to celebrate the BC Provinces 150th Anniversary in 2008! They will also be allowed to use the BC150 Years logo (above) and go online in the BC 150 Years calendar of events.

The Provincial Capital Commission have produced several short video's of places throughout the Province of BC celebrating an anniversary in 2008.

Cheers, See you in BC in 2008!

Fred Haven't been to Victoria in years - always enjoyed The Empress Hotel.  Most Americans don't realize how famous your gardens are and how really mild the climate is,  Karen

Hi Karen....Victoria has been Canada's best kept Secret for many years. First the Russian Fur Traders, then the Spaniards came 300 years ago, then the British all seeking the Northwest passage to the Orient, and then the Europeans, and Now Everyone is finding our Secret Quality of Life here along with our mild climate.

You see.. the Japanese Gulf Current travels around our coast line and keeps the air warm, so we seldom see temperatures below freezing in the Winter in Victoria. Vancouver and Seattle get our Rain, so you might say we live in Gods country here.

Cheers, hope to see you here again, lets do Coffee!

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

As a transplanted Canadian (ex-Montreal), I couldn't resist dropping by to say hello, Fred.
My parents live in Oak Bay and I look forward to heading north in 2008 for BC's 150th birthday party. We'll have to get together for a 'cuppa tea'.
Am curious about your Welcome Mat, which identified my Missouri IP address. 'Properties' indicated it was from http://www.geozoodle.com  but their site told me nothing. Can you shed some light?

I used to travel to Vancouver on a regular basis for business.  Loved the city and the people.  Did the helicopter flight to Victoria a couple of times and it was gorgeous.  Hope I can get back soon.
