Worthington's Historical Treasures - May opportunities to see history in your backyard

"May is National Preservation Month" according to PreservationNation.org:

"May is National Preservation Month and this year’s theme is “Discover America's Hidden Gems.” Communities from coast to coast are filled with unexplored historic treasures—and May’s the month to celebrate them!"

If you are in central Ohio you can discover history on the streets of Worthington:  Discover Worthington's Hidden Gems (many out in the open.)

Worthington Historical Society

Visit the Worthington Historical Society online for information about the museums and historical sites in the City of Worthington including:

  • Orange Johnson House  Worthington
  • The Doll Museum at the Old Rectory
  • The Jeffers Mound

May 2012 opportunities to visit the streets of Worthington include:

First Friday in Old Worthington, May the Fourth

The official Worthington site says of First Friday:

"Come to Downtown Worthington the first Friday of every month for First Friday! Shops will be open late and visitors will be greeted with specials, arts and live entertainment. The event runs from 6pm -9pm. Don’t miss this great Worthington event!"

The Worthington Ohio website is Worthington.org

Worthington Farmer's Market

The summer season of the  "Olde Worthington Farmer's Market' starts next Saturday, May 12, 2012. You will have three opportunities to visit the Olde Worthington Farmer's Market in May 2012!

Worthington Farmer's Market

Typically the 1st Olde Worthington Farmer's Market there is a plant sale, flowers, herbs... There are also meat, cheeses, baked goods and more.   Last year Worthington had Green on the Green the same day as the first, Olde Worthington Farmer's Market of the summer season (the winter season of the Worthington Farmer's Market ended, last weekend.)  The Old Worthington Business Association page I find online is still referring to the first Farmer's Market of the summer season in 2011.

Plant Day

The front page of the Worthington Historical Society site (link above ) refers to  Plant Day and has a special invitation to an event at Wren House on May 12, 2012:

"You Are Cordially Invited… to see Lynn Bird, Worthington artist, in her studio, as she paints the mural "Six Weeks and Seven Hundred Miles"

Lynn Bird's studio is upstairs from Wren House at 693-1/2, Suite 102.  The Worthington Historical Society site says "--just go up the stairs and turn to the right"  to find the "Out On A Limb Studio, home to Bird Graphics."

The studio will be open on May 12 from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.    The mural celebrates the journey of the first 100 settlers in Worthington.

A final event in May to look forward to is the Worthington Memorial Day Parade on  May 28, 2012

More about this Worthington event later this month

The photo is the historic 'Snow House'  on W. New England Avenue in Worthington.  'Snow House' is just one of the interesting treasures on the streets of Worthington.
