Give BloodAMAZING Weight Loss Program:  Donate Blood!

Like many Americans I could use to lose a pound or ....well let's just say I'm not at my Annapolis weight and haven't been for a long time!  But today I lost a pound in about 10 minutes!  Now losing a pound in 10 minutes might be enough to get me a New York Times bestseller, except like most lose weight quick schemes, there's a catch!

I can only do that "1 pound in 10 minutes" program once every 8 weeks, and that pound seems to come back within a few days.  The human body just won't allow me to do without it long term, because it's kind of critical to my daily ability to function to get that pound back!

So by now you've probably put it all together, but donating a pint of blood is roughly a one pound weight loss.  Now right after donating I had some OJ and some cookies, so I'm probably rapidly replenishing that pint and that pound!

So even if that one pound weight loss is only temporary, you'll be walking lighter for awhile because you'll feel good about yourself for helping others in need, and trust me, we're NOT going to run out of people in need of donated blood anytime soon.  From kids to seniors, there's a demand that's not going to let up.  And I'm one of those 6% with the A- blood, so I know my local blood center Hoxworth Blood Center will be calling me pretty soon after my eligibility window hits to help replenish their stock!

If you live in the Cincinnati area, Hoxworth Blood Center probably has a convenient location for you to drop off a pint!  You can even make an appointment online.  Visit www.Hoxworth.org for more information regarding their programs, locations, and to create a profile to schedule an appointment.  It's easy and you'll be glad you did!

Many moons ago, I was the Director of Nursing at the local blood bank in St. Pete, Fl.  At the time, I weighed in at 100lbs and was too light to donate.  You needed to weigh at least 103 to donate a "light bag" and 110 for a regular.  I felt I needed to experience the donor process first hand so I bulked up my eating to get to 103.  Haven't stopped gaining since.   :(

It is a great thing to do.  Congrats.

Very interesting post. If only that pound would stay off once it came off.

Hi Bliz, You are not the only one not in Military weight parameters. I would love to get these extra pounds off myself, and donating a pint of blood is a Great Cause and a step in the right direction too. I do remember a Lab Training, and A Neg is rare. They will be calling you back within 8 weeks I am sure. Those O Neg donors are always on Top of the List, since that is always universal type to donate.

Great Pay it Forward, BTW.

Leslie, My metabolism used to burn off everything, then every 10 years it slows down another notch!  Cool thing you did wanting to experience the donor side of the deal!  I'm not a huge fan of needles, but a necessary evil to get the desired result :)

Jim, Tried to give it a different spin this time :)  And yes, it always comes back!

Jerry, I'm not in the Universal Donor category, but 6% is low enough to make me popular with Hoxworth :)

Last time I donated blood I past out... I get very very quezy at the site and smell of blood... The funny thing is I come from a long line of nurses and the high tolerance for the gore genetic... Kinda skipped me...

Stacey, It happens!  Honestly the way they set us up, you have to look to see the bag we're filling.  It's down and away to the left in not in the natural line of sight.  I usually wind up surfing on the Crackberry or talking with a co-worker in a neighboring chair.

Conrad, It's a relatively easy thing to do, so I keep going and building on the total of pints donated.  I've lost track how many gallons I've given since my first time as a high school senior.

What an admirable thing to do... I have not been able to donate my blood for a very long time because of Lupus but if I could I would... God bless you and congratulations on that one lb. loss!
