Freshly Fallen Snow - Nature's Beauty in Portsmouth NH!

Portsmouth NH - Sun Shining Through Snowy Trees - Ann Cummings 12/2007

To me, one of the beauties of Mother Nature is looking out on freshly fallen snow.  And if the sun's shining right after a snowfall, even more beautiful!

There's something so magical about freshly fallen snow - the big flaky soft kind of snow.  It's quiet and serene, all peaceful and perfect.  Some of the beauty can be seen and touched, some can only be felt, and pictures never ever capture any of that the way you see it and feel it in person.

I was out shoveling my back walkway this morning, and these words kept running through my head, "a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow".  I kept having those words run through my head, and finally figured out they're part of the Simon and Garfunkel song, "I Am A Rock".

While outside in snow like the one we just got and in the last snowfall, it really is a 'silent shroud of snow'.  The world is quiet and peaceful, and the snow is gorgeous....  you just have to experience it yourself to really know what I'm talking about.

Here's a poem from Robert Frost:

          "The way a crow
           Shook down on me
           The dust of snow
           From a hemlock tree
           Has given my heart
           A change of mood
           And saved some part
           Of a day I rued."

Fresh Snowy Trees - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

"Snow is like fall leaves.....loveliest when it's still on the trees."
I read this in a magazine somewhere, and wrote it down because I liked what it said.

It is true - it is so magnificently beautiful when fresh snow coats the branches on trees, even the tiniest little branch gets coated.  That moment, when it's still on the trees and before it melts and falls off or the wind blows it, that moment is when it is at its prettiest.....   really something that should be seen in person as pictures rarely can capture what that's really like to see.

It's snowing here again today.  It started last night around 10pm, and 12 hours later, it's still snowing.  A light fluffy beautiful snow............

Hey Missy - it is just so peacefully pretty when it's freshly fallen.  If only it didn't age like it does..... but we do like it when it melts, too!  A great New Year to you, too!!

Brother Dan - one of the reports I saw said we were to get 6-8 inches here, and we've gotten maybe 4 or so.  It's still snowing but very lightly at this point.  When it's as pretty as it is here today with this fresh snow, I'd rather have snow than rain.  But there are those days when I'd really rather it be rain......  About 45 minutes north and northwest of me in NH, they got a foot and more of snow with this storm.

James - I'm with you on the melting part after the pretty part!

Many thanks for the comments and I wish you each a wonderful New Year!

Hi Teri - how pretty your area must be for the Christmas holiday!  It's funny because we rarely actually have a white Christmas here.  This year - this year is a whole different story because it began snowing here in early December and it seems it hasn't really stopped!  That's must unusual for this area.

I really do enjoy seeing the beauty and magic of fresh fluffy snow, and how beautiful the trees and bushes are when they're covered with it.  I'm not a snowmobiler, skiier, boarder, or any other winter sport lover.  I'm just an admired of the peace, quiet, beauty, and calming of fresh snow.  Then it can melt when I'm finished admiring it!   ;-)

Happy New Year!!

Hi Bill - we've certainly had more than our share here in my areas this year, and if we didn't have any more until next winter, I'd be quite happy with that!  Spring is just around the corner.....I know it is!

I wish you a wonderful 2008!

Hi Julie - I'm glad you enjoyed my post.  It's a kind of beauty that pictures really never adequately convey, one that must be seen and felt in person in my opinion.  It is gorgeous here today, I went out and took some new pictures because it's so pretty right now!

Hi Lisa - you get it!  The air is so still and quiet, and you just feel so peaceful with a snow like today's.  That's how I feel anyway.  And it is just so calming to look out on.  And then comes the shoveling.  I don't usually mind that, if it's not the wet heavy snow - that can really be a pain.  I pulled some thing in my side a couple of storms ago, took a couple of days for that to take care of itself.  But all better!

Happy New Year to you both!!

Hi Midori - your comment made me smile!  I suspect there are many Floridians who'd rather see this part of Mother Nature from afar or through my eyes.  It is a beautiful sight to see in person, though....so if you ever want to come for a visit, you're welcome to see it first hand.

Believe it or not, I'm a native Floridian as well!  I was born in central Florida - Clermont - and I still have plenty of family all around that area.  I go back and visit several times a year, but my heart's up here.... for now anyway!

Happy New Year Midori!!  May we all have a fabulous 2008!

Hi Maureen - thanks for the comments!  We don't usually have snow at this point, or if we had some it's long melted away.  Pretty to look at but quickly ready for it to melt away.  Today's snow is already melting away - the sun is shining and the temps are right about freezing.

Happy New Year!

What a Beautiful post Ann.  Thank you for sharing it with Fraiche Aire.  I'm struck by how starkly different yet beautiful the two types of ground cover are...freshly fallen snow...and the ground covering of freshly fallen leaves in fall.  Each has it's own gift to be appreciated at the proper time.  Thanks again for your many meaningful contributions to the Active Rain Community.

Oh, Ann...how did  I miss this post??? You just spoke to my heart! I LOVE SNOW!!! It's hard to describe to someone the absolute quiet that snow brings unless you've experienced it. Walking in the woods in a fresh snow is so quiet you can hear your blood rush through your body. (Or, maybe I'm just weird!)

Those are gorgeous pictures!  Happy New Year to you and your family!

Ann those are awesome photos! We had a foot over the last week and I can sometimes loose the wonder of it all. Thanks for reminding me and you oughta see it out here...you would die! It's absolutely breathtaking with 14,000ft peaks and snow covered river banks. I'm sure each of our regions takes your breath away only if we stop to savor.

Have a blessed New Year!!

Hi Lola - you're so right about the 2 very different seasons and what they each bring - fall and winter.  Both are spectacular.  And don't forget spring and summer.  We're lucky here because we have the magnificence of 4 distinct seasons and lots of magical wonder in each.  Thank you for such a nice comment!

Hey Linda - I thought of you as I was writing this post...I know you love snow!  When I was out shoveling the morning I wrote this post, the quiet and stillness was just a wonderful thing to feel.  It really does take actually experiencing it to know just what those words really mean, too.  And nope, you aren't weird, because the quiet is so quiet you can hear all kinds of things like that!  We have more snow coming today and overnight......

Hi Floyd - thank you for reading my post and WELCOME to Active Rain!  I know you've been getting a lot of snow out your way, and I can only imagine how absolutely beautiful it is.  I used to live in Idaho was I was a lot younger, and I remember how beautiful that was with snow, too.  We do sometimes lose sight of the beauty all around us when we go about our day to day lives.  The morning I wrote this, I kept just gazing out my windows out how beautiful everything was with that fresh coat of snow clinging to everything.  I don't always see what's right in front of me, either, but I did that morning.

Many thanks for these great comments - much appreciated!
I wish all of us a Happy New Year!
