The Pots and Pans You Cook With May Be Harmful to Your Pets

Our teakettle died yesterday, and while most of you probably don’t use one, I use mine tea kettle www.tweidman.comeveryday to make my tea (I'm from England-I don’t drink coffee--hate the stuff).  Of course, this was an emergency and we went out early today to find a new one.
What does this have to do with cooking utensils being harmful to your pets? The little pamphlet that came with my KitchenAid tea kettle (you know, the ones we never read) had a Pet Warning--so I read it.

This is what it told me:

  • fumes from everyday cooking can be harmful to your bird and other small pets (undefined); particularly smoke from burning foods. Really, I never heard of this....I kept reading.  
  • Cooking sprays, fats, margarines, oils and butter when overheated will create dangerous fumes which can overwhelm a bird’s respiratory system.
  • Scorched plastic handles, and non-stick cookware contain (a long word but PTFE for short) which can also emit harmful fumes.

Never allow your cooking utensils (pots, frying pans, etc) to overheat if you have birds or other small animals. Ventilate the kitchen immediately if that does happen, and take the bird to another area.

I wanted to confirm this info before I posted it and the ASPCA has a whole page on how to keep your bird safe from kitchen dangers. They have lots of interesting dont’s including don’t let your bird fly free when you may be opening the oven door. Uh Oh, cooked bird. It also mentions the following are hazadous to birds:

  • - avocados - onions
  • - garlicParrots
  • - chocolate in any form
  • - coffee (grounds, beans, chocolate-covered espresso beans)
  • - tea
  • - yeast dough
  • - salt
  • - tomato leaves and stems (green parts)
  • - potato leaves and stems (green parts)
  • - rhubarb leaves
  • - cigarettes and other tobacco products
  • - moldy or spoiled foods
  • - alcoholic beverages


So don’t serve them those for dinner. I don't have birds as pets (I'm allergic) but I would hate to see anyone's pet harmed.

All this from reading a tea kettle pamphlet...who knew?

Toni - wow, who knew there are so many harmful thing to birds?! We have a bearded dragon (Thelma) and whenever we get our home fumigated for spiders we take her out to the car until the coast is clear. Gotta watch over the little critters!

Good information.  Don't have a bird but you know ,they used to use parakeets in coal mines to detect fumes that could kill humans in higher doses.  I think that pamphlet is giving you a clue, without fully disclosing, that this stuff ain't great for us either.

Andrew - I was thinking that as I was writing and thinking about how young children might be affected. When my son was small, he played in the kitchen while I cooked. He had a drawer full of plastic things to play with.

Leslie - you're right! They did use those poor little things in the mines.

Toni- i had to stop by to read this. I never would have thought to read the little info that comes with a tea kettle!  I've always heard that chocolate, for example, can be dangerous for your dogs but never knew any of that about birds.  I also heard that grapes were bad for dogs as well.

William - that is very true (no pun intended); there iKris a lot of things that we think of as wonderful that are harmful to them. Kathy mentioned chocolate which is really bad for dogs and cats too. The ASPCA site that I gave the link to above has great info on stuff that is harmful to pets.

Kristin J  - I never realized that about birds either but maybe because I don't have them as pets. I love them but can't have them in the house.  They are delicate creatures.

Kristin H - There are many things that doggies and cats should have too. The ASPCA site has a wealth of info.

Kathy - It must have been a slow day :). I don't usually (well, to be honest my last kettle lasted 11 years so I hadn't had a chance to catch up on kettle issues :); but I'm glad I did this time. I didn't know about grapes you might check on that at the ASPCA site. Chocolate is bad for cats too from what I understand.

I had no idea, but those poor birds don't have much lung capacity either.  None of that is good for us either.  Even the shampoos we use are poisonous!
