Another Chance to Get it Right

ThinkingI drive around neighborhoods a lot that I hope some day to pick up more listings in or to show prospective buyers that these particular homes are great places to live if they meet their needs. With the onset of the holidays home sales just seem to take a natural slowing down before things pick up again in the new year. It gets me thinking.

I really like the slower week between Christmas and New Years as everyone is past the frenzy of Christmas shopping and prepares themselves for a new year. It kind of reminds me of a clean sheet of paper or a bright and shiny new penny. Something is ending and something fresh and unknown is approaching. This is such a great time for thinking and reflection on what did work for you in your life in the past and what didn't. Hopefully you can abandon that which wasn't working and focus on some new ideas going forward to make your life and the lives of others around you better. Pause and just reflect.

I think as we get older, the turning of the calendar year helps us to get ANOTHER CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT!

An old joke about birthdays is every time you get another one it's good. It beats the alternative!

A new year represents a new beginning. Not that everything will go perfect in the upcoming year either. But life is a zig zag line. Hope springs eternal. You'd like your little zig zag line with its three steps forward two steps back to be trending positive and that your are not getting worse each year. That would be sad and no way to live.

Bride and GroomThink of all the many new fresh pages we encounter in our lives. One that comes to mind is getting married and starting a new life with someone you love.

There is all the promise in the world in that situation. You cannot even envision all the ups and downs you will have in the years to come.

There will be financial situations, where you choose to live, children stories, dealing with parents, jobs, health issues, stress. Life is so messy for all of us.

Yet with each new beginning there is always the promise for growth and lessons to be learned.

Schoolwork

Even the changing at mid year from one semester to the next or the beginning of a school year gives children a fresh start. New friends, new classes, new teachers, another challenge to take on.

So change is to be embraced. Clean sheets of paper offer glorious "possibilities" for us.

All of life's clean slates offer "another chance to get it right."

I wish all of you a beautiful clean blackboard for the upcoming year with a fresh piece of chalk. You are writing your own story each day. Take everything you've learned up to this point and get that piece of chalk with it's dusty feel to it and start creating something on that board that is truly you. Maybe even grab a few pieces of colored chalk too. Don't worry if it gets messy at times. You can wipe your hands on your pants. Live your dreams this year.

Gary ~ You are so right - I am ready for that clean slate of New Year!  I just got the 2008 calendar we hang in our kitchen out and ready, and it was so nice to open it to January and see all the boxes with no handwritten notes, appointments or reminders - yet!  Happy New Year, Gary!

Al: A clean slate is like a receiving a brand new box of Crayolas isn't it?

Kathy: Take the old calendar down, put the new "unmarked" calendar up. Ready for all your new plans. A very good feeling indeed.

Gary, Thank you for your comments on my New Buyer Question blog the other day and for so eloquently expressing in your blog exactly what I have been experiencing this week. After the frenzy of the holidays I have finally had a chance to reflect rather than react. After another day of wiping the 2007 slate clean, I will be ready to take on whatever 2008 brings! Hope you have a wonderful New Year and that, at the end of the day, your zig zagging trends up.

Deborah: Isn't reflection great at this somewhat quiet and peaceful time of the year? You get your batteries charged up and ready to get going for the upcoming new year. Have a great '08!

Joeann: Excellent reminder of that old saying that "Today is the beginning of the rest of your life." New beginnings can start anytime we choose them.
