Your Links Stink!

By
Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices - C. Dan Joyner 21498

One of the most frustrating things ever is when you click on a link in an email or on a website and it's broken! That is the quickest way I know of to get your reader to click right back off your site or delete your email. Before you send out an email with links to a website, check to make sure it works.

Same is true with your website. Check all your links at least once a month to make sure they are still working. Sometimes, websites you may link to change, move, or reconstruct and this causes the page you originally linked to disappear. Not only will working links make your readers happy, but it will help you with google ranking as well.. A good way to repair your website links is to visit Google Webmaster Tools every six months or so and correct all the broken links it gives you!

Read your emails and visit your website and take a look at them the way a buyer or seller would. Does everything look good and work properly? Also, get bold and link the images to somewhere. People want to click on them, so make them link somewhere relevant!

Linking is a great thing and works well to get readers interested in you and what you have to say. Linking makes your information more credible and shows you know what you are talking about!

Good evening Sheila. I have not done this in quite some time. I did not know this feature existed on Google.

Michael -  I love the webmaster tools.. it makes keeping your website up to date easier.. of course, you can always just go to your site and check each link one by one.. then remove or change the ones that are broken.

I admit, I need to check my links more often. It is particularly important after a job change.

One lesson I learned a long time ago is to email myself any mail or marketing piece so I can check the link. Same about checking blogs.

Gmail makes it easy to check links..    I hadn't hear of Google Webmaster Tools.  Thanks for this valuable tip.

That sure is frustrating. I regularly check my site for broken links. Just in case one sneaks by me.

Broken links are very annoying and gives a poor appearance of credibility. You'd be surprised how many prominent bloggers have broken links.

I was not aware of this way to test links. Normally I just click on the links to see where they go on my sites, and fix accordingly if needed.

Thanks for that link. I saw a few property links for listings that have sold came back as 404s but that's to be expected and no way really around that unless I link to the ZIP and that would lessen the expectations for buyers.

Link rot. It happens and you can weed, feed, water and replace, thin out the bad ones. Add the ones that have turbo again. Can hyper with the tap tap. We all work on the SEO daily. Not once and done. Not how it works.

Sheila, this is especially crucial if you send an email to potential client. If they're interested but get a broken link, the trust and interest dwindles. As you said, links change, so regularly make sure everything is in proper working order.

Kevin – wow… that is a ton of time a day.. bet you could write a lot about that topic!

Phil – I always check the link before sending it out in an email.. I send to myself first.. just in case.
