The boob tube has changed trends over the years. Back then, soap operas and other series used to dominate the ratings games. Now, reality TV shows occupy better timeslots than other types of programs. Kids and adults alike are addicted to the spices and flavors being offered by these shows. They chew and digest whatever is served – singing, dancing, modeling, cooking, home makeovers, celebrity lives, and even a house where different kinds of people dwell together for some days.

Reality TV has really occupied the corners of home entertainment. Looking over the internet, reality TV shows are among the most talked about topics in social media sites. The contestants and the results of every eliminations round are always the most searched terms on search engines. The judges of these shows have also become equally popular with the contestants – with some of them earning the irks of people whenever something negative is spoken of their favorites.

The hypnotic effects of reality TV shows is very evident among kids aged 8 to 12. This particular age bracket should have been viewing shows like cartoons. Yet, according to a survey, 3 out of 4 programs they liked most are reality TV shows – particularly those geared towards discovering new generations of singers.

Obviously, reality TV shows do bring a lot of good things like showing the best of talents a person can have. These TV shows serve as channels for a lot of ordinary people to do extraordinary acts to achieve their dreams. In cases of reality TV shows following the lives of celebrities, it only shows that they too are normal people like us. It’s just they are more popular than the rest of us making them talked about.

Reality TV shows has made the TV landscape more competitive. For once, there were only a few producers who gambled on the creation and staging of these shows. Now, American TV seemed to be overdosed of reality TV.

The goodness of Reality TV shows may not have been realized yet by most people who view them. For some, they celebrate strength. For others, they magnify weaknesses. The natural obsession of many people towards perfection is an undeniable factor that hooks them to reality TV shows. In some instances, most of the people who watch these shows are also dreaming of putting themselves on the shoes of the contestants.

Reality TV shows are a bit of both – good and bad. Its growing trend is unavoidable. More and more of them will sprout covering aspects of human lives that exude drama, laughter, power, talent, and dominion. The good thing about them is that they can be used to convey the true spirit of the American Dream and that is through perspiration, innovation, going through risks, and reaping the rewards after. The bad thing is that they can really change your viewing habits such that other more important and more realistic things in your own life can be forgotten. It is the reality!

It's pretty funny, but I don't know a single person who will admit to watching any of these shows.  Me?  I love the Bachelor!

I think there are way too many reality shows. It's like we are all becoming voyeurs, wanting to spy on others' lives. That said, I watch America's Next Top Model. I'm not really sure why... it's pretty silly. I guess it's my one mindless indulgence. Okay, okay, every once in a while I read People Magazine, too.
