Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American humanist, humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer.  William Faulkner called him the father of American Literature.  Here is a quote about New Year's Day that I thought all of us would enjoy after a night of partying.

"NEW YEAR'S DAY

Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions.

Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath.

Today, we are a pious and exemplary community.

Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient short comings considerably shorter than ever. We shall also reflect pleasantly upon how we did the same old thing last year about this time. However, go in, community.

New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls, and humbug resolutions, and we wish you to enjoy it with a looseness suited to the greatness of the occasion."...  Mark Twain

P.S. I’m starting off 2008 with a bang!  My blog Crystal Ball for 2007 ~ Who Got It Right? Plus a Look into 2008 has been featured in the group Front Porch Majority.  At Front Porch Majority “we're just sittin' around and rockin.' why don't you pull up a chair and sit a spell. We're not talkin' 'bout anything special. You're welcome to change the subject if you don't mind us chimin' in. Matter of fact, everybody's welcome to speak their mind.”  This group was founded by :  Bill Roberts – “Baby Boomer” Retirement Planning

6 Comments on New Years Day from One of America's Best

Hi, Jan W:  Hope you had a safe and fun New Year's Eve last night.. when you get your nap out today you'll find out that I linked to you in a post this morning!  Have a wonderful New Year's Day!

Hey Jan. I love that expression of paving Hell with our best intentions. Maybe some of our resolutions will stick this year! Happy New Year.

Hey Jan E:  My hubby and I had a very safe New Years Eve... we are both sick as dogs so we stayed in last night.  No partying for us.  If I had known you were going to link to my blog, I would have come up with a blog with less satire...   I've been over to your place already, and have commented on your new blog which is worthy of an award.  You will get plenty of action with that blog and I hope they go back and read the one before on the Po Folks Restaurant lampoon with Lee.. thank goodness he didn't know it at the time.  Happy New Year!

Gary:  I don't know why I thought this was so funny when I read it the first time.  I'm sick as a dog today, and somehow, it's just not as funny when your sick (or probably when you're hungover either).  I hope that my new year's resolution will stick... it's about working out and staying fit.  I'm in training for this year's 18 hole league... those ladies are monsters!

Jan, I want you to know that because of your good writing I subscribed to your blog. I don't want to miss any more of your posts. And thanks for promoting Front Porch Majority. It helps all of us.

Happy New Year.

Bill Roberts

BTW Mark Twain is just a little too cynical for you.

Hey Bill:  Thank you for the kind words and for subscribing to my blog. You're so right... this blog is cynical.  Like I told Gary, I don't know why I thought it was so funny the first time I read it... I guess you've just got to be in the mood for cynicism.
