We have a Costco Wholesale on Maui and we love it. I don't know what we ever did before they opened up here, about 10 years ago. There is only one store still, in Kahului at 540 Haleakala Highway, at the corner of Dairy Road. It's not one of the really big warehouses, but we're happy nevertheless. The great thing about the location in Kahului is that it's right by the airport, so if you're coming on vacation you can make this your first stop, load up the car and head off to your condo.
Some of the local items that might be of interest are:
- Maui pineapples for $2.99
- fresh sashimi - that's raw fish
- kalua pork and lau lau's - Hawaiian food
- boogie boards, masks and snorkels, fins
- beach towels
- aloha shirts
- macadamia nut products
Today I had to go into Kahului, so of course I stop at Costco on my way out of town, though usually I would avoid the place on New Year's Eve, as it gets just nutty. It wasn't too bad first thing in the morning. The hot items today included FIREWORKS and SASHIMI. Sashimi is the local favorite that is customary to eat at New Year's time, for good luck I guess, it's a Japanese tradition. It's raw fish of course, and we have plenty of that in Hawaii. I have never seen so many trays and platters of sashimi in our store at one time. Those are 12" trays selling for about $40 each. They'll sell a small fortune of that today, at $10.99/pound.

Do they sell fireworks in your state? Boy they sure love them over here. Look at this aisle filled with fireworks. I'm so glad we don't live in town anymore, because the air gets so thick with smoke that you can't breathe! Again, fireworks are a local tradition and you can't take that away. You should have seen all the shopping carts loaded up with family packs of fireworks. It's a good thing today is raining cats and dogs, so the firemen will get a break tonight.
Maui Pineapples are such a deal for only $2.99 a piece. They're huge and sweet and juicy and grown right here on the island, and picked when they're ripe. You can't beat them.
Did you know that Hawaii is the number one consumer of SPAM in the nation, per capita? Well if you like SPAM, you can buy it by the case here, in 2 flavors, regular or low salt.
Aloha from Maui - come back again! Happy New Year.
