Shades of White. A poem for no one specific...

Shades of White

Partly cloudy, basically drizzle

The weather is stuck in routine

Yet another holiday season advertisement

Swoons from the screen

Parenthetical promise of snow

Is thinly felt through the perfume of roasted nuts...

They will light the lamps any minute now

They will go home

They will drink and dance

Through the dusk. They know:

In this city

The nights are grey

But the chestnuts - sweet.

I wish it'd snow

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! Inna, we need to start a peotry group here. So many of us have tried our hand at this and it should be showcased somewhere.

I think what gets me most about this is the fact that you're in Florida. I mean, otherwise the stage you set merits reasonable expectation. You are very talented, but then I knew this was in your arsenal.

Happy New Year sweetie!!!!!

I am all for a poetry group, Jennifer! Everytime i post one, i feel weird, one of those it doesn't belong on AR moments, but would be nice to have a 'safe' place for our musings of the poetic nature, woulnd't it? You start one, and I swear I'll join, and I promise to post!!!
Thanks for stopping by here, and the compliments, of course...
You have yourself a regret-free (if that's possible) 2008...

Inna, we went to Colorado for Christmas and had the most beautful white Christmas.  It snowed the most on Christmas day that it had in 100 years in the Denver area.  Two days later we flew out while it was snowing again.  Going to the airport we drove up beside some snow plows that were throwing up yucky dirty snow and we remembered why we love living in TEXAS!!

If you want to see some great snow pictures you can check a white christmas out on my blog.

Like Jennifer, I'd swear you were somewhere in the Northeast with the setting you cast here.  Beautifully done!

Marchel, i am going to stare at those pics, after dinner! I can never seem to get enough of it now that i am in fl...

Paul, I was 'wishing' i was in the NorthEast, but the setting is New York... There are no chestnuts where I am now, my friend, and not even a mild promise of snow.
Thanks for stopping by!

If anyone knows cold and snow, it is you, my dear.  Your vision is lovely.  Do you miss the snow?  I wouldn't think you would miss the cold.  I think I would like the smell of chestnuts roasting -- that's just a song to me.  Don't ever think this doesn't belong here.

Happy New Year, Inna!

Elaine, i do miss the snow, mostly around the holidays... I don't miss the cold so much as the beauty of the immense white expanse in all directions.  It's that smell in the air that makes you nose hurt, but just enough to not take away from it.  It's the naked crooked trees with their slender branches covered in the thinnest layer of ice that sparkle like no diamond ever could at the slightest provocation...
Yeah, i miss it!

But you know, it's all within reach, and my kids are growing up with palm trees and the Ocean, and the snow is only a flight away.

You too, dearest, have a fab. new year!!!

Inna - The last message of the year came through my blackberry and brought a warm smile. The first post I read in the new year has the same effect. Coincidence? Hardly. The author is the same and I thank you for the note, for the poem, for being you.

63,355 members, hah!, it is mine.

Inna- seeing the white on TV with the AC on is as close as I venture. Have a great Holiday!

J-Mac, if any of my words put a smile on your face - it makes it all entirely worth it! Thank you for being you, my friend!!!

Mark, taking these little journeys in my imagination works just as well, but only because i know the scenery all too well. Thanks for stopping by!

Inna,

Love this poem.  I was just reading with my 7 year old daughter from "Where the Sidewalk Ends", took a break, and ran into your poem.

We had quite a white Christmas here!

Thank you, Martin! Both my kids were huge fans of all his stuff, but that one is by far, the favorite:-)
Appreciate you stopping by here and your feedback, of course.
