There was a time when you were comfortable in a hardware store since you felt like a neighbor and you probably were.  Small town hardware srores, similar to the local drug store with soda fountain, have all but disappeared from the American landscape.  Those days are not gone completely in Mount Vernon - Village Hardware in the Hollin Hall Center on Fort Hunt Road is thriving.  It believes in personal service and neighbors helping neighbors.

Larry Gray opened Village Hardware in 1979 and still believes in the business practices that made his store a success - 7-day-weeks of hard work have paid off for Larry and his family.

People will drive miles out of their way to shop at Village Hardware since they know they will get the best possible product at the best possible price.  Some people have misconceived ideas that prices at the store are higher than at the larger discount chain stores.  Actually, 75% of the items in the store are cheaper than the bigger stores.

Village Hardware services customers from all over Northern Virginia since it is the only independent hardware store left in Alexandria.

Hi Karen!  I LOVE any kind of family business and shop them even if they cost a little more.  I am a family business, too!  -Virginia

Virginia  Family owned stores generally do well, because people get tired of the boring megastores,  Karen

Karen--Everyone needs a little hardware store like this in their town! Too bad the big box stores have caused many to close...Hopefully customers ward off this fate for the Village Hardware store forever!

Teri,  It is encouraging that family owned stores are doing well - people are not always well served at the megastores,  Karen
