Today's your Lucky Penny Day in the
Murphy, NC and north GA mountains!
It's Lucky Penny Day each year on May 23rd. Perhaps a Lucky Penny will be lucky for you today. Taken at face value, a penny doesn't buy you much anymore, if anything. It used to. During our parents and grandparents days, a penny bought a lot of things. Most notably, Penny Candy got its name because a piece of candy cost a penny. Oh, the memories of these special trips with our grandfather to the corner store for penny candies are some of our fondest!
Inflation year after year after year has certainly eroded the penny's value. There has even been some talk as to whether to discontinue the penny....Heaven forbid! How many of you remember or collect the Wheat back pennies?
The penny still serves a very useful purpose...and some of them are lucky pennies. Lucky pennies can also be found on the ground. Superstition has it that you should only pick up a penny that is lying face up. Not all of the pennies you find will be lucky, but it only takes one lucky penny used to scratch off the mega winner on a scratch-off lottery ticket!
Here are some other sayings for pennies: A penny for your thoughts, Put your "two cents" in and my personal favorite alternative use of a penny... A handy screwdriver when nothing else is available.
